Dear Future Professionals,
I love the fact that our Paul Mitchell Schools focus on creating magic. At Ulupono Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School, we encourage every staff member and Future Professional to help Create Magic for everything we do. Whether we’re writing a lesson plan, working with guests, or planning a class party, Creating Magic makes our school a fun place to be, and who doesn’t want to be in a fun environment? When you Create Magic, your customers will come back and bring their friends.
Here are five great ways to create magic in your school, spa, or salon:
- Smile. Greet each client with a smile on your face.
- Give compliments. If the person next to you is doing a great haircut, compliment that person and the guest.
- Write each other up. Every time somebody does something right, add it to the Caught Ya board.
- Help each other out. If you’re not busy on the floor, find someone and offer to help. Don’t wait for a Learning Leader to send you. Help without being asked.
- Bring your ideas to work with you. If you’re involved in something in your community, tell the people at your school. Don’t wait for your Design Team or Learning Leaders to think of a charitable event. Great ideas can trickle up as well as trickle down.
At Ulupono Academy, we all have our own Create Magic Activity Books filled with fun ideas. CLICK HERE to download a modified version that can be used in any business. Print copies on 8-1/2 by 11-inch paper, fold in half, and distribute to everyone on your staff. Include a colorful cover to personalize and you’re ready to go!
Don’t wait for someone else to take the lead. Take responsibility and help Create Magic for your school, salon, or spa.

Gianni Brocato Enrolls in Paul Mitchell School in
St. George, Utah
Hair A Paul Mitchell Partner School recently welcomed Future Professional Gianni Brocato to its family. Gianni is the son of Sam Brocato, president and artistic director of beauty product manufacturer Brocato.
Born in New Orleans, Louisiana, Sam Brocato opened his first salon in Baton Rouge in 1976 and has since launched four salons and two academies of hairdressing. He was inducted into the British Hairdressers Hall of Fame and has received the honor of World Top Fashion Hairstylist from the World Hairdressing Congress in London. He was named Editorial Stylist of the Year at the North American Hairstyling Awards and has been chosen as one of the top 50 educators in the professional salon industry. The author of Beautiful Business, Sam is also a featured artist at the Alternative Hair Show.
“Sam Brocato was my very first industry mentor and hero,” says Winn Claybaugh. “He truly inspired me over 25 years ago to turn my new business into a legitimate, passionate career. To now have his son in my school and to give back to Gianni what his father gave to me many years ago is truly an honor.”
John Paul Mitchell Systems Cofounder, Chairman, and CEO John Paul DeJoria adds, “Sam Brocato is one of the most talented artists in our industry. I have known his son Gianni from the time he was born. We are honored that Gianni chose our Paul Mitchell St. George school. Gianni and Sam, we won’t let you down!”
Proud papa Brocato describes his son as a creative and passionate person. “Gianni had been in Utah on a 60-day outback course,” Sam recalls. “He fell in love with the area and wanted to stay a while longer. Not yet sure of his future career plans, he saw that a new Paul Mitchell School was opening in St. George. On his own, he decided to go talk with the school’s staff and then to enroll. His mother and I are personally ecstatic, and we know Gianni’s Paul Mitchell pedigree will only add to his success. To see his abilities nurtured by my friend Winn Claybaugh, his partner John Paul DeJoria, and the Paul Mitchell Schools is a great comfort. The Brocato family celebrates this occasion. Good luck, Gianni, and God bless your school’s Learning Leaders.”
Three Paul Mitchell Schools Celebrate Grand Openings
John Paul DeJoria and Winn Claybaugh took to the skies again to welcome three new schools to the Paul Mitchell family. The first stop on their August grand opening tour was Normal, Illinois, where they joined school owners John and Jenny Kanski to celebrate the opening of The Campus A Paul Mitchell Partner School. Then it was on to Missouri for the grand opening of the St. Louis Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School. Last stop: beautiful St. George, Utah, home of Hair A Paul Mitchell Partner School.
As Dean Winn Claybaugh states, “Although we now have three more schools joining our Paul Mitchell School network, for us it is not about three more buildings; it is about three more relationships built on trust, love, and a passionate commitment to our Future Professionals. All three of these new schools have owners and leaders who completely fit in with our family.”

SCHOOLS IN THE NEWS
Ulupono Academy Raises Money and Awareness

The Ulupono Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Honolulu, Hawaii, recently participated in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life. Many Future Professionals and staff members withstood four hours of rain and power outages to raise awareness and $800 in their annual cut-a-thon at the July event, while other members of the Ulupono team relayed around the track all night.
“We marched proudly in the parade of supporters dressed in black and purple and holding our Paul Mitchell banner,” said Admissions/Branding Leader Kevin Kalaukoa. “It is events like these that continue to inspire us to do more. Events like these take the life out of us and are filled with hard work; however, they make us who we are today.”

Paul Mitchell Schools Host Kabul Cut-a-Thons
When Michigan hairdresser Deborah Rodriguez went to Afghanistan in 2001 as part of a relief group, her skills were sought by Westerners in need of haircuts as well as by Afghani women whose salons were banned during the Taliban regime. With help from sponsors like John Paul Mitchell Systems, Debbie started the Kabul Beauty School, which today remains a symbol of comfort and independence for the women who learn and teach there. Their tragic, funny, and universal stories are captured in Debbie’s book, Kabul Beauty School.
Future Professionals from Paul Mitchell The School in Costa Mesa, Sherman Oaks, and Sterling Heights welcomed Debbie for benefit book signings and cut-a-thons to benefit the Kabul Beauty School.

Create Magic!
From Be Nice (Or Else!) by Winn Claybaugh
Creating Magic is all about giving people that dose of fun, love, and positive energy they need to perform their jobs every day and to help them feel good about the commitment they’ve made to your organization. The “old school” method of working with people was about manipulating and policing each other, and you know that doesn’t work. The new school of working with each other teaches you how to Create Magic.
Jesse Briggs, owner and founder of Yellow Strawberry Salons, tells a story about how he creates magic in his organization. Whenever he hires a new receptionist, he has her order a limousine, make reservations at a top restaurant, and join him there for dinner. After eating a delicious meal served perfectly in a beautiful setting, Jesse asks, “How do you feel right now?” The usual response is, “Oh, Jesse, this was so wonderful!” He then says, “That’s how I want our customers to feel after they’ve had an experience in our business.” Rather than dictating what customer service should look like, Jesse empowers that new receptionist by giving her the opportunity to experience it for herself.
There are many ways to create magic in your organization. Here are five simple steps to follow every day.
- Always be in a great mood. Before you walk in the door, take a deep breath, smile, and think, “It’s show time!”
- Be interested in others and make them feel important. Make it a priority to connect with people and positively influence them before you focus on your tasks for the day.
- Be in the present moment and “play.” Schedule time to “be” with others, not just “do” with others. Be present and play in meetings, classrooms, and on the clinic floor.
- Make the ordinary extraordinary. Find ways to motivate, help, and guide your team with your own special magic. Do special little things that inspire them.
- Communicate and celebrate victories. Share your story and be a cheerleader. Celebrate big and small victories every day. Find any reason to celebrate and FACE your team.

Benny Spandy, Class of 2007
Paul Mitchell The School Sherman Oaks
When 45-year-old Benny Spandy started cosmetology school, he was nice to teachers and students alike. “I brought in food, helped everyone, and brought so much positive energy to the classroom that all the students loved me for making the school a happy place,” he recalls. Unfortunately, the school director did not share his classmates’ enthusiasm. She called Benny into the office and told him to stop being so nice to everyone. “I was not allowed to talk to my guests while working on them anymore, and I was told to stop seeing them off at the door,” he says.
It bothered Benny to be “reigned in” from making his customers happy. “I started to think this might not be the profession for me,” Benny says. Discouraged, he considered leaving the profession but decided to change schools instead. “When I walked through the doors of Paul Mitchell The School, I felt positive energy, hospitality, friendliness, respect, love, and even good feng shui. After a tour of the school, I decided this was the place I was meant to be. It felt like it was made for me.”
Benny started the Core program in April 2007 and said, “I could hardly believe my ears when we were told from the start that everything in the school is based on being nice, sharing, giving presents to each other, and giving and receiving hugs between the teachers and students. I could be myself again.” In week six of the program, the class did an exercise where they had to cross the classroom stepping on books only. Benny kept going back to support other students. After the game, all the students shared their experiences about the game. “When everyone was done,” Benny says, “the Learning Leader FACE’d me and said, ‘I don’t know who you are and from which planet you came, but if you have any more brothers and sisters on that planet, please go get them and bring them here.’ I had tears in my eyes as all the students FACE’d me at once; this was the most beautiful thing someone had told me in my life. Finally, after 45 years, I find myself in my true home.”
Benny was chosen Student of the Month for June 2007, just for being so nice. “I have experienced so many happy moments since I started at Paul Mitchell The School,” he says. “I am truly excited to discover that there are still places on this planet where it is safe to just be nice all the time!”
“Benny is the type of person who thinks about others as much or more than he thinks about himself. A visionary and a team player, he’s always looking for ways to make people happy. I know he’ll be extremely successful because of his giving, his sharing, and his big heart of love.”

Nguyen "Noogie" Thai, Class of 2004
Paul Mitchell The School Costa Mesa
A certified Learning Leader and color specialist at the Cao Institute A Paul Mitchell Partner School, Noogie Thai joined the team soon after graduating from Paul Mitchell The School Costa Mesa. Stella Davis, one of Noogie’s Core Learning Leaders and now director of Paul Mitchell The School Sherman Oaks, recalls Noogie as “one of the most talented, creative, and innovative artists I have ever had the pleasure of teaching. I knew from day one that he would be very successful.”
Noogie was named a finalist at the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) in 2003. With a keen interest in fashion, he has worked at LA Fashion Week and has partnered with celebrity stylist and John Paul Mitchell Systems Editorial Director Lucie Doughty to work at various events and photo shoots in and outside the country. His work has appeared internationally in Australian, French, German, and Italian magazines as well as American Salon, Beauty Launchpad, Black Book, Modern Salon, and many others including the fall 2007 Cut & Dry.
Noogie was recently invited to join the Platform Artist Club (PAC) and is a member of the Angus M. Team headed by Paul Mitchell Co-owner Angus Mitchell.
Noogie’s advice for Future Professionals: “It's important to keep yourself open, be prepared to pay your dues, and never burn any bridges. This industry is smaller than you think, and you never know who can open doors for you down the road.”

“Noogie is a great example of being ‘homegrown’ in the Paul Mitchell family. Within five years, he went from graduate to Learning Leader to known Hollywood hairstylist to platform artist to member of the Angus M. Team. It's definitely not by chance, as Noogie is a gregarious person and a great team player. It takes more than an artistic nature to succeed; his humbleness and respectfulness are an example for Future Professionals to follow.”
