Dear Future Professionals,
For many years, my salon (Salon L.A. in Cincinnati, Ohio) has been the top retailing Paul Mitchell Focus Salon in the state. With 32 employees, we enjoy a great reputation as an exclusive, career-building salon in a high-traffic, high-end location. As you can imagine, my staff and I take our Take Home business very seriously.
For a long time, we had a mandatory one-year training program for new employees. We needed it, because most new stylists weren’t even qualified to shampoo hair when they graduated from beauty school and they knew little to nothing about Take Home sales. Then a Paul Mitchell School came to town. Admittedly, it was my school so I may be somewhat prejudiced when I talk about our graduates. But as someone who takes selling seriously, I can honestly say that the Paul Mitchell graduates I’ve hired in Salon L.A. came out of school trained and ready to go straight to the floor: not as assistants or interns but as stylists. In an industry where a retail percentage of 1215% is considered very good, we have Future Professionals doing double that amount. Their sales skills are so impressive that top stylists in my salon frequently ask them, “Can you show me how to sell Take Home?”
Being successful in our industry requires so much more than technical skills. The culture at Paul Mitchell Schools helps Future Professionals develop drive, determination, a “say yes” attitude, and a spirit of giving back. Although the salon you eventually end up working for may require that you follow some type of assisting or training program as you start out, be proud in knowing that the education you receive to improve your Take Home sales and other skills will give you an edge that salon owners love to see. Having new graduates who can hit the ground running with not only the technical skills but also an understanding of how to “grow your business” through rebooking and Take Home sales is extremely valuable to a salon. It’s a bright, bright future and I’m so excited to be part of it.

Mark Travis Hoyer & Donna Levy
 
Hair and makeup designer Mark Travis Hoyer has worked extensively in theater for the past 15 years in the fields of wig, hair, and makeup design. With over 20 years experience in makeup and hair and wig styling, Donna Levy has worked in television, film, opera, and theater. Together they are the hair and wig stylists for the West Coast production of Wicked at the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles, California.
Mark Travis Hoyer has worked on many national Broadway tours, including Wicked, Rent, The Phantom of the Opera, The Lion King, and Hairspray. Currently, he is house head of hair for the Pantages Theater in Los Angeles and wig supervisor for the Los Angeles company of Wicked. He has worked with talent including Ian McKellen, Carol Burnett, Annette Benning, and David Hyde Pierce. For the past 10 years, Mark has been the resident hair and makeup designer for the Long Beach Playhouse. A graduate of California State University Long Beach, Mark studied at the Career Academy of Beauty in Seal Beach and serves on the executive board of IATSE Local 706, Hollywood’s hairstylist and makeup artist union.
 
Her theater experience has led Donna Levy to travel and work with celebrities such as Jason Alexander and Martin Short on the first national tour of The Producers. Donna has been on the principal makeup and wig crews for numerous shows at the Los Angeles Opera (The Grand Duchess, Madame Butterfly), Ahmanson Theater (La Boheme, A Midsummer Night’s Dream), Kodak Theatre (The Ten Commandments: The Musical), Mark Taper Forum (Cherry Orchard, Ten Unknowns), Pantages Theater (Hairspray, Casablanca) and the Orange County Performing Arts Center (The Lion King, The Nutcracker).

Paul Mitchell Schools Get a Handle on Recruiting and Managing Gen Y
Lisa Orrell, author of Millennials Incorporated, brought her insights to Paul Mitchell Schools and John Paul Mitchell Systems. Here’s what she wrote about us in her blog on July 22 (http://blog.generationrelations.com/):
Last week I had the pleasure of conducting my seminar on attracting, recruiting, managing and retaining Gen Y for executives from Paul Mitchell Schools and Paul Mitchell Corporation (the hair products team) in Los Angeles, CA. What a great group of people!
They are very interested in knowing the most they can about Gen Y since that target is mainly who attends their 110+ schools across the U.S. Plus, the team from their product division was very interested in learning about recruiting, managing and marketing efforts for Gen Y.
Winn Claybaugh, the Dean & Co-founder of Paul Mitchell Schools, bought my book and personally contacted me about conducting a seminar for their team. Luckily, his ideals about management and team building are a Millennial’s dream! He really has created an amazing team of school instructors and a great management team who help run the business. So any of you Millennials wondering what to do for a career, OR that are considering going to hair school, you need to check out their program!
Also, anyone can really learn a lot from Winn’s popular book, Be Nice (Or Else!), so I recommend it to all you frontline managers! He shares his insights about how to “be happy” and offers a lot of helpful info for people in the business world who manage people of all generations.
Now I’ll be presenting a session at their annual company event in October, so I’m looking forward to meeting more amazing people from their family. And, for a large company, they really are like a family! Very unique culture compared to most multimillion-dollar corporations.
This is just another great example of how seriously companies are taking the influx of Gen Y into the workforce, and their willingness to adapt to the needs of this new generation. Congrats to the Paul Mitchell organization for being so progressive and willing to learn about their future leaders!

Future Professionals Meet High Standards to Attend Paul Mitchell Gathering
Roughly 280 students representing more than 60 Paul Mitchell Schools traveled to Las Vegas to participate in Paul Mitchell’s annual Gathering. The July event featured new products, success-building education, world-class hair shows, and motivational messages from the company’s leadership.
Eight Future Professionals won competitions at their schools to earn a spot on the schools’ Design Team. Working with 20 models (also Future Professionals who competed for the honor), the group put on a main stage fashion show that brought the audience to its feet. School Dean Winn Claybaugh opened the show with a tongue-in-cheek apology to the company’s artistic directors. To Robert Cromeans, Angus Mitchell, Scott Cole, and Linda Yodice, who also presented shows at the event, Winn said, “I have to apologize to all of you in advance. I’m really, really sorry that what you’re about to see is much better than you guys are going to produce!”

An additional 20 Future Professionals were selected to help John Paul Mitchell Systems with registration and other backstage tasks. Selection criteria included a great attitude, great school attendance, and a glowing recommendation from their school leaders. One Future Professional had such a great attitude at the event that she was chosen to work with Angus Mitchell and assist his creative art director, Wylder Flett, with wardrobe for the entire weekend.

Paul Mitchell Schools Are Kicking Butts!
Paul Mitchell Schools Dean Winn Claybaugh has been very outspoken and passionate in challenging anyone and everyone to quit smoking. “I take very seriously my role as a leader and mentor,” Winn says. “I want to encourage everyone in my circle of influence to love and care for yourselves enough to overcome this nasty habit. In the last week of visiting three Paul Mitchell Schools, I can name over ten people who all committed to me that they would quit smoking, including a Paul Mitchell school owner.”
David Lowry from Paul Mitchell The School Houston kicked the habit so he could be a model at Paul Mitchell’s Gathering. “I wanted to represent beauty and not smell like an ashtray,” he said. School Owner Rosie Matos added, “Before Gathering, Winn was coming to visit our school. We told our Future Professionals that smoking was a real turnoff for him and encouraged them to not even smell like smoke when they hugged him. David took on the challenge then and decided not to smoke.”
David’s efforts inspired his school’s admissions assistant Ashley Womack to quit. “ I am now addicted to sunflower seeds, but that won’t make me ugly and kill me!,” Ashley reports. “I feel amazing and have more money, better skin, a better body, and I did the Congo with the Future Professionals as we do every Friday and was not out of breath!”
Future Professional Jeffrey Crowder of Imagine A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Little Rock, Arkansas, kicked his ten-year habit when he started school. ”I was beginning a new chapter of my life and I wanted to start smoke free,” Jeffrey says. “I was tired of the smell, the expense, and the inconvenience. I have completely quit, I feel healthier, and I don’t smell like smoke any more!”
Jim Salerno, co-owner of Paul Mitchell The School Chicago, smoked a pack and a half to two packs a day for 34 years before laser treatments helped him quit. “The technician took me into a spa-type room, seated me on a reclining chair, and applied laser light to my temples, forehead, nose, and wrists,” Jim recalls. “Still doubtful that this treatment was going to work, I left the office, got into my car, looked at the pack of cigarettes on the seat next to me, and crumpled it in half. It has been two and a half years since my treatment and I am still smoke free.”
Paul Mitchell CEO and Chairman John Paul DeJoria adds, “It's not that we have the right to tell people what to do with their own body. It’s that we have the right to love them and care for them enough to want people to live a healthy life.”

Costa Mesa Helps with PM Planner Shoot
Future Professionals from Paul Mitchell The School Costa Mesa took part in a photo shoot for Paul Mitchell’s January/February PM Planner. They assisted with every aspect of the monthly guide, including prop shopping, display layout, display building, and art direction.
“Not only did they pick the props and help plan, create, and execute the displays, but they were an amazing team,” said Paul Mitchell Creative Director of Advertising Nanette Bercu. “These images will also be used in our What’s the Deal and planner for Focus Salons.”

Carolina Academy on High Alert for Special Guest
When Paul Mitchell Schools Dean Winn Claybaugh visited the Carolina Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School, Future Professionals welcomed him with a fun surprise. "When I pulled up to the school, they were all waiting outside with their sunglasses and earpieces," Winn said. "They then escorted me into the classroom where there was a screaming audience. Talk about a powerful introduction! There was no way I could go wrong after that."

Character Counts
Katie Sharer, a graduate of Paul Mitchell The School Orlando, was a top 10 finisher in the recent 2008 Miss Florida pageant. Perhaps more important, her fellow contestants awarded Katie with the Quality of Character Award.
“I enjoyed the competition,” Katie told the Tampa Tribune. “Being placed in the top 10 was exciting. Everything went well. But I wasn’t meant to win. I felt from the beginning that my reason for being there was to support the other 44 girls in the competition.”
Clearly, the other girls felt and appreciated Katie’s support. “They used to vote for Miss Congeniality,” Katie said, “but this award has a slightly different twist. The character award is based more on integrity, honesty, and sincerity. It’s a little deeper than just getting along with the other competitors.”
Katie has competed since she was a young girl, but now plans to focus on her career. She has several offers from salons in South Tampa and eventually hopes to own and operate her own high-end salon.

Paul Mitchell Schools Support City of Hope
City of Hope is an independent biomedical research, treatment, and education center dedicated to preventing and curing cancer and other life-threatening diseases. Every year they choose an honoree who appoints a board of representatives from his or her industry to raise money for the organization. This year’s honoree was Carmen DePasquale, a beloved and respected stylist whose beauty empire includes DePasquale the Spa, DePasquale Salon Systems, Artistic Academy of Hair Design and Aesthetics, ECRU New York, and Cures by Avancé. Carmen’s co-chairs for the 2008 “Beauty Can Cure” fundraising event included salon owners Sam Brocato and Van Council and beauty academy co-chair Winn Claybaugh.
“Although Carmen has nothing to do with Paul Mitchell, I love and respect this man so much for who he is within the beauty industry,” Winn said. “When he called, I absolutely wanted to get involved to support him.” At Winn’s invitation, the Paul Mitchell Schools raised over $37,000 in just 30 days, bringing the one-year campaign total to $1.2 million.

Cincinnati Academy Helps at Extreme Makeover Home Edition
Six Future Professionals from the Cincinnati Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School visited the set of TV’s Extreme Makeover Home Edition. The group had a great time doing haircuts for the cast, crew, and volunteers and spraying the crowd with Paul Mitchell Moisture Mist.
The crew was in Cincinnati to build a home for the Akers family, whose three children suffer from physical challenges: Christian (10 years old) has Crohn’s disease, and Brooke (7) and Faith (4) both have spinal muscular atrophy, a disease that has put them in wheelchairs.
The Cincinnati Academy team also attended the press conference for the family the day after the “reveal.” On behalf of the school and Paul Mitchell, School Owner Linda August donated individual bags of product to each family member and a year of free haircuts for the entire family. |
A few weeks later, Ginger Akers brought the children to the school for their back-to-school haircuts. “The Future Professionals had a magical time talking to and hanging out with the kids,” said Admissions Assistant Gina Burris. “We are all looking forward to seeing the Akers family back at the Cincinnati Academy.”

Paul Mitchell The School Orlando Gives Haircuts to the Homeless
Design Team members from Paul Mitchell The School Orlando participated in two Haircuts for the Homeless events in July 2008. They have five more events planned for the rest of the year.
Design Team member Iraida Santana said, “There are many reasons people become homeless: lack of education, untreated mental illness, alcoholism, and drug addiction. By becoming involved firsthand, I got to know them and see them on a personal level. They had a good sense of humor, were kind and grateful. I was moved by the change on their faces and the positive effect this event had on each one’s self esteem.”
“This event left our Future Professionals speechless,” said Admissions Leader Sara Seber. “It opened their eyes wider and led to an amazing conversation about non-judgment. The Future Professionals gained a deeper understanding of the power of their roles as hairdressers.”

Xcell Academy Supports Challenged Athletes Foundation
Future Professionals and Learning Leaders from the Xcell Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Hoover, Alabama, spent a sweltering day laughing, sweating, and raising money at the XTERRA Southeast Championship race in Pelham, Alabama, on June 10, 2008. The group held a cut-a-thon at the Paul Mitchell booth and raised $500 for the Challenged Athletes Foundation.
XTERRA offers challenging multi-sport adventures, exciting trail runs, charity bike rides, and winter adventures for runners and bikers of all abilities. The XTERRA Southeast Championship is sponsored by Paul Mitchell.

Trend Setters College Gives Free Back-to-School Haircuts
Scissors flew and clippers buzzed as the Design Team from Trend Setters College of Cosmetology A Paul Mitchell Partner School, joined local barber shops and businesses to provide back-to-school haircuts for area boys. Admissions Leader Ateka Kile, Learning Leader Advisor Chella Phillips, Learning Leader Hollie Mallaney, and six Future Professionals donated their time and equipment to provide 100 of the 300 haircuts given to boys ages 5 to 12 at the August 18 event, held at the Kankakee Community Resource Center in Kankakee, Illinois. State and congressional representatives were also on hand for the fun.
Area barbers came to the school months in advance to help prepare Future Professionals for the big day. Design Team member Kristen Thomas said, “I could not believe how many kids were in the gymnasium waiting to get their hair cut. It really made me stop and think about how lucky I am to be able to give back to these families, even though it was something small. I can’t wait to do this again, and now I am on the lookout for ways I can help anyone out!”
“We were honored to be part of such a pivotal event in our community,” said School Owner Lori Clark. “I’m sure it helped the burden of back-to-school costs to receive a free haircut, especially in such an inspiring environment. We show up anytime we can give back to our community and mentor our Future Professionals.”
Sales Leader Lisa Price added, “These Future Professionals enabled the kids to have confidence in themselves because they feel better about themselves. I told them they were changing the worldone kid at a time!”

Maintaining High Standards at Industry Events
The Paul Mitchell Gathering is an amazing educational event that takes place in Las Vegas, Nevadaparty town, USA. When attending events like this one, many people are tempted to burn the candle at both ends by attending the training during the day and jumping into the party scene at night. Yes, there’s a time to play but there’s also a time when all eyes are on you. Your actions and behavior at one event, small or large, Las Vegas or Tinytown, can propel your career to the stratosphere or set it back beyond repair. You can be the most talented stylist in the world, but making a fool of yourself at a professional event can do irreparable damage to your career. This is definitely a place where talent alone is not enough.
At Paul Mitchell Schools, we’ve developed several systems to guide our team behavior. From our Team Professional Guidelines to our Professional Code of Conduct and our Zero-Tolerance Standard, we hold our team members to the highest behavior standards. Before attending the Paul Mitchell Gathering, every participating Future Professional (including models, Design Team members, and those who assisted behind the scenes) signed an agreement called the Future Professional Standards of Conduct and Professionalism. These are great guidelines for anyone to live by when attending business-related events. As author Jeffrey Fox advises in How to Become CEO, an office party is “not a social gathering. It is business. Never party at an office party.” We wholeheartedly agree!

Brittany Garvey, Class of 2009 The Delaware Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School
When the Delaware Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School offered three chances to win a trip to the Paul Mitchell Gathering event in Las Vegas, Nevada, part-time night school student Brittany Garvey stepped up to the plate. “The first person to sell 50 bag deals [Paul Mitchell products in a reusable canvas bag] got an automatic win,” said School Director Trina Carter. “Brittany sold 50 bags in less than three weeks . . . Wow!”
At first Brittany didn’t think she had much chance to win the contest. Then a friend told her she’d never win, and that inspired her to rise to the challenge. She posted a bulletin on her MySpace page, inviting people to come into the school and buy a bag deal. She asked her friends to repost it to their friends, and she also asked family and friends to forward an e-mail announcement. “We had to turn in our results every Thursday,” Brittany says. When she turned in her first eight sales and learned that she was in the lead, she was “completely energized to keep being number one so I could go to Las Vegas,” she said, “It was just e-mailing and asking people. The worst they could have said was no, and I would have just moved on and asked somebody else.”
Brittany, age 24, earned a liberal arts in science degree before enrolling at the Delaware Academy. “I love the culture of Paul Mitchell,” she says. “I don’t have to pretend I’m somebody else.” Her hopes for the future include working for really great people, building a large clientele, and someday opening her own salon where she can support a family and live a happy, healthy life.
Brittany’s advice for fellow Future Professionals: “Never give up. If you’re going to school part-time, it may seem like a long time but it’s going to be worth it in the end. Whatever you want out of life, you can definitely get. Never give up hope. Always believe.”

Rachel Burney, Class of 2008
Paul Mitchell The School San Diego
If her name sounds familiar, it’s because Rachel Burney was our featured Future Professional in June 2006. She was part of Paul Mitchell’s Head for Change campaign in June 2007, and she has visited numerous schools in the Paul Mitchell network to raise awareness about child soldiers in Uganda through the nonprofit organization Invisible Children.
Before enrolling at Paul Mitchell The School Costa Mesa, Rachel spent four summers in Africa, volunteering with an organization that cares for AIDS orphans. She interrupted her studies for a year to work with Invisible Children, then transferred to Paul Mitchell The School San Diego and graduated in January 2008. By July, she was off to Rwanda to work with the nonprofit organization Keza, where she will help open one of the country’s first cosmetology schools and a salon that will train and employ abused, impoverished, and oppressed women.
“Never did I imagine as I filled out my application for school that this journey would impact my life in the profound ways that it has,” Rachel says. “I had expectations of mean, gossipy girls and a strict, stuffy learning environment. Not only were my expectations proved wrong but it only seemed to become better and better. Being at Paul Mitchell The School changed my life forever. Since walking into the school nearly three years ago, I’ve known my place and my heart belonged in two places: in this industry and to be a voice and fight for my friends and family in Africa. I’ve struggled this past year with the fear that I’d have to choose between one and the other. I never thought in my wildest dreams these two would come together. I have been given the best education available in the world and I am excited to take it to Rwanda and spread it from there.”
Rachel is currently in Rwanda, learning and planning for the new school. She will return to the United States briefly to raise involvement and support for the project before heading back to Rwanda to run the school for two years. She will return home every four to six months to spread awareness and raise funds.

Tips from the
Green Team Newsletter

Did you know that there are over 370,000 hair salons in the U.S., and each collects about one pound of hair every day? This month’s Green Team Newsletter includes fun ways to recycle that hair, so roll up your sleeves and start sweeping the floor!
- You can donate hair to Locks of Love, a nonprofit organization that makes hair prosthetics for financially disadvantaged children in the U.S. and Canada. The kids are under age 18 and suffering from long-term medical hair loss. To help this wonderful organization, you can cut hair in a ponytail and donate it in one piece. - Matter of Trust uses hair to clean up our planet. They use hair scraps to create mats that soak up oil spills. Remember the big oil spill in San Francisco? These folks helped clean it up with hair mats. The mats are also extremely efficient drip pans during oil changes, under leaky cars, machinery and pipelines, and even as booms for storm drains. - You can use the hair in your own backyard. Cut hair is a great fertilizer. It reduces water evaporation up to 50% and prevents weed growth and snail infestation. If you have problems with deer, toss handfuls of human hair around your property. When deer smell the human scent, they will avoid it. Remember that human hair decomposes quickly, so you will have to keep adding it.
With so many eco-friendly ways to use cut hair, you can stop putting it in the trash! Get creative and think of more “green” ways to dispose of it.

The Advanced Academy Program
Paul Mitchell Advanced Academy offers information-packed advanced haircutting, hair coloring, makeup, and photo shoot education. Most courses are 3- or 5-day hands-on retreats, taught by a team of nationally recognized artists and educators. Our multitiered curriculum includes basic, intermediate, and advanced education that we call Core (“Learn the Rules!”), Adaptive (“Bend the Rules!”), and Creative (“Break the Rules!”).
Our education incorporates an advanced, accelerated learning system, combined with in-depth technical guidance. Whether you’re an experienced stylist, a veteran art director, or just starting out in your career, you can rejuvenate yourself and fine-tune your craft in a relaxing, personalized, compassionate educational experience.
