Dear Future Professionals and Industry Friends,

This month’s newsletter focuses on careers in editorial, session, and runway work. Fashion careers are completely different from salon work, and I’ve seen more people fail than succeed. Here are a few tips for making it in this industry:

  • First, photograph your work and build a portfolio. Start with your digital camera, take classes in photography to train your eye, and re-create pictures from magazines. Enter competitions, post your work on Paul Mitchell Connect, MySpace, and Facebook, and submit it to trade or local publications.
  • Put yourself in the right place. If you’re serious about becoming an editorial stylist, you need to be in New York, Los Angeles, Paris, Milan, London, or Tokyo.
  • If you can’t move to one of those cities, check out your local advertising and modeling agencies. All communities have local businesses that use local talent to create their advertising and marketing campaigns and they all need hairdressers and makeup artists.
  • Assist as much as you can. You’ll need at least five years salon experience working with talented stylists who do editorial work.
  • Build your skills and repertoire. Before they book you, clients must know you can manipulate hair, work fast, be a team player, and work under pressure. Magazine pieces are expensive, and clients can’t afford to take chances on a newbie.
  • Assess yourself. Do you enjoy meeting new people, working with new teams, living out of a suitcase, and not knowing whether you’ll work this week? Are you confident, flexible, and humble? If a photographer says, “I hate it,” can you smile and say, “How can I make this lovely for you?”
  • Constantly research and study. There’s a lot of information available, such as the interviews on hairdesignertv.com.

Danilo, an amazing editorial stylist, trained in San Francisco then moved to a great New York salon. When a stylist couldn’t make it to a big magazine job, they sent Danilo instead because they knew he could handle it. The magazine liked him so much that they booked him again. He has since toured with actresses Gwyneth Paltrow and Anne Hathaway, and his work has been featured in Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, and other publications. If you dream of playing at this level, you must work and practice to be the best. If it’s your heart’s desire, this will be a fun journey. Sit down, buckle your seatbelt, and go for the ride of your life!

On December 8, 2008, CNNMoney.com posted a timely article about three industries that are thriving in the current economic climate, and education was at the top of the list. SCHOOLS IN THE NEWS

Paul Mitchell Schools Launch National Caper Event

Twenty-five years ago, staff members from Von Curtis Academy (now Paul Mitchell The School – Provo) drove nine Future Professionals to the Long Beach Hair Show in the first-ever Caper event. The Future Professionals had earned the trip by selling Paul Mitchell products in a special contest designed specifically for them. This year, Future Professionals from 75 Paul Mitchell Schools are competing for 2,000 tickets to the 2009 Las Vegas Caper. Each ticket includes two nights’ hotel stay at the Mandalay Bay Resort, a Caper party on the first evening, and two days of education featuring the following classes:
  • Motivation with John Paul DeJoria, Winn Claybaugh, Angus Mitchell, and Robert Cromeans
  • Hands-on cutting with Mike Helm, Dave Holland, Scott Cole, and DJ Muldoon
  • Hands-on color with Audra Turner, Kate Caussey, Linda Yodice, and Stephanie Kocielski
  • Hands-on styling with George Morales, Kevin Michaels, Lucie Doughty, and Noogie Thai

To qualify for a Caper ticket, each Future Professional must sell a minimum of 30 Take Home bag deals: specially packaged sets of three Paul Mitchell products from the Color Care, Extra Body, Moisture, Smoothing, and Tea Tree product lines.

Depot Days Cut-a-thon Benefits Jason Walters

Becky Howard is a Paul Mitchell Senior/Premier Associate and educator with the Vanguard Salon Systems Distributorship and a stylist at Twisted Scissor Focus Salon in Hartselle, Alabama. Mattie Ryan is the newest member of Twisted Scissor and a graduate of Xcell Academy – A Paul Mitchell School in Hoover, Alabama. Gary Cooper owns Emmanuel Focus Salon in Birmingham, Alabama. The trio teamed up to raise $840 with a cut-a-thon at Hartselle’s annual Depot Days festival. “We originally wanted to help our Paul Mitchell family from Vanguard’s territory who were victims of Hurricanes Gustav and Ike,” Becky says. “Thankfully, none here were devastatingly affected. When we received news of Jason Walters, an Ohio Academy Future Professional who was badly burned in a fire after the hurricanes, we instantly knew who truly needed our help.”

Thanksgiving Gratitude Center

Future Professionals at Imagine – A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Little Rock, Arkansas, had fun and gave thanks at their November Be Nice (Or Else!) Learning Center. Each month, Admissions Leader Casey Stephens and the school’s Design Team create a cultural learning center outside the admissions office, based on a section of Be Nice (Or Else!). November’s center included a turkey coloring contest and instructions for writing a gratitude letter. “It was a great stress reliever and motivation to attend school on November 26, when we announced the contest winner,” Casey said.

Louisville Future Professionals Walk and Work for Charities

Future Professionals from Paul Mitchell The School – Louisville joined American Girl dolls for a fashion show and tea party fundraiser for Kosair Children’s Hospital neonatal unit. The October event took place at Millionaire’s Row in Churchill Downs, home of the Kentucky Derby. Future Professionals spent three days styling dolls’ hair for hundreds of little girls attending the event and raised $1,300 for the hospital fund.

American Girl fashion show chairman Martha Bryce acknowledged the Future Professionals’ contributions in a letter to the school: “One of my favorite anecdotes of this year’s show is about your stylist who was offered a gratuity for excellent work and accepted it only on the condition that it be donated to the hospital. Bravo!”

Louisville Future Professionals, Learning Leaders, and administrative team members participated in the city’s 3-mile Walk for the Cure on October 26. The group gave free hugs along the way and raised $200 to support breast cancer research and awareness. Many Future Professionals overcame their fear of heights to walk across a bridge spanning the Ohio River in honor of friends and family members. Their smiles and good cheer were as strong and deep as the Ohio itself!

Paul Mitchell Schools Partner with Larry King Foundation

Design Team members from the Orlando and Tampa Paul Mitchell Schools joined forces with Tampa’s Hillel school to raise money for the Larry King Cardiac Foundation. Hillel, a private Jewish school, is placing a yearlong emphasis on heart health by educating students on steps they can take and raising $10,000–15,000 for the Larry King Cardiac Foundation. A recent event included exercise and martial arts classes, cholesterol and BMI checks, a hot chocolate and used book sale, and an hour-long walk-run in exchange for donations. Paul Mitchell Future Professionals raised nearly $700 as parents, students, and teachers lined up for haircuts and tours of the new Paul Mitchell beauty bus.

After getting his hair cut at the event, Larry King, Jr. said, “We were hearing all week that kids were not going to get their haircuts but once they saw the huge bus and the cool stylists cutting their hair, lines formed immediately.” King Jr. serves as the foundation’s president and his children attend the Hillel school. In recognition of the children’s efforts, CNN’s Larry King and the recipient of the funds will visit the school in February. “It was a huge treat to have the group from Paul Mitchell with us and we hope they come back when my father and the patient come back next year,” King Jr. said. “They just helped save a life and we would like them here to meet them.”

The joint relationship between the Larry King Cardiac Foundation and Paul Mitchell Schools began last year when the foundation participated in the annual Magic of Memories FUNraising event. Paul Mitchell Schools got a great “shout out” for the alliance at Larry King’s 75th birthday party, emceed by Leeza Gibbons and held in Los Angeles. School owner and Advanced Academy team member George Morales went backstage and met the evening’s featured entertainer, Grammy Award winner Paulina Rubio.

Tampa School Fights Breast Cancer

Wearing stickers with the names of friends or family members affected by breast cancer, 25 Future Professionals from Paul Mitchell The School – Tampa participated in the Making Strides Against Breast Cancer walk for the American Cancer Society. The school raised over $1,000 from donations, a silent auction, and weekly “wear pink” days.

Indianapolis School Holds Canned Food Drive

Paul Mitchell The School – Indianapolis started a canned food drive on November 13. After viewing the short film Success Unshared Is Failure, featuring John Paul DeJoria, Future Professionals were challenged to think about the needs of others and collect 500 cans or more for a local food pantry. “Our Paul Mitchell Schools are not in existence just to cut hair and place Future Professionals in careers,” said Operations Leader David Daugherty. “Although that is important, our real goal is to make a difference in our communities and the world.”

Bella Capelli Joins Operation Christmas Stocking

Future Professionals and staff members from Bella Capelli Academy – A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Robinson, Pennsylvania, decorated and filled 30 Christmas stockings for soldiers in Iraq. Admissions Leader Heidi Jarrett wanted to do something for the troops this Christmas so she contacted Boatsie’s Boxes, a nonprofit charitable organization dedicated to supporting the troops far from home. Boatsie’s plans to send 20,000 filled stockings to the troops this year. Visit www.boatsie.com for more information.

North Haven Helps the Homeless

Twelve Future Professionals from North Haven Academy – A Paul Mitchell Partner School joined the United Way of Greater New Haven and dozens of health and counseling providers for Project Homeless Connect. The event addressed a wide range of needs for the city’s growing homeless population. Several hundred people received a variety of services, including haircuts from the Paul Mitchell group. “It feels so good to help people feel better about themselves,” said Future Professional Stephanie Bergeron. “A haircut can do that.”

Temple Launches Scholarship Program

Sharon Riser, director and sales leader of the Temple – A Paul Mitchell Partner School, dreamed of changing women’s lives just as the beauty industry changed her life. When she joined the Women’s Giving Circle (WGC), she found the perfect venue for making her dream come true. Springing up in cities across America, Women’s Giving Circles are communities of women philanthropists who strategically leverage their charitable dollars for greater impact. Through WGC-sponsored nonprofit organizations, the Temple will donate five full scholarships and student kits to area women in 2009.

Tips for Starting Your Runway or Editorial Career

Paul Mitchell Future Professionals have many opportunities to spread their wings. When the key makeup artist for Project Ethos (a biannual red carpet event in Los Angeles) canceled a week and a half before the show, Paul Mitchell The School – Costa Mesa Future Professional Tuesday Hammerl was given the chance to step in. In a week and a half, Tuesday designed and diagrammed seven looks for six designer runway shows and one dance group; compiled the list of makeup needed ($20,000 worth) and imported it from the event sponsor; and hired and managed 25 makeup artists, including freelance professionals and 13 Future Professionals.

If you dream of opportunities like this, here are four tips for getting started in the exciting world of fashion shows, photo shoots, television, and film:

Vanessa Amoretti, Class of 2008
Paul Mitchell The School – Phoenix

When Paul Mitchell The School – Phoenix was invited to enter the Scottsdale Sassoon Salon Cosmetology Student of the Year competition, they sent Future Professional Vanessa Amoretti. After competing against her classmates for the honor, Vanessa took on students from 20 other cosmetology schools, including Toni and Guy and Kohler Academy, and won the statewide competition.

Held October 27, 2008, at the Scottsdale Sassoon Salon and judged by salon staff members, the competition rated students on their technical ability, use of color or perm, suitability of the cut to the model, and complete head-to-toe look with an emphasis on healthy, shiny hair. Vanessa received a 5-day ABC Cutting Course valued at $1,265, to be taken at the Sassoon Academy in Santa Monica, California.

Admissions Leader Kelley White said, “We are so proud of Vanessa. She won our in-house competition and diligently prepared for the statewide competition under the guidance of our education team. Her hard work and practice really paid off, and she is a fantastic representative of our school.”

Vanessa, a transfer student, has been involved in every extracurricular activity, competition, and team offered by the school. “You can see in the photos that Vanessa chose a challenging and different haircut,” Kelley said, “She took time to storyboard her inspiration, which detailed her vision and game plan.”

“Vanessa has a great eye for style,” added School Owner Linda Yodice. “Just looking at her, you want to know what she's up to, where she's been, and what she thinks. As our Design Team leader, her mere essence attracted a lot of new Future Professionals to enroll in our school.”

CLICK HERE to see a YouTube video of Vanessa in action during the statewide competition.

“Naturally talented, acutely focused, and determined to be the best she could be, Vanessa studied hard, practiced a lot, and took things seriously. We're so proud of her. She represented all of us so well. All in all, Vanessa is one sharp cookie!”

Artistic Director for Paul Mitchell Professional Hair Color and Co-owner of Paul Mitchell The School – Phoenix

Edwin Messier, Class of 2007
Paul Mitchell The School – Rhode Island

Edwin Messier graduated from Paul Mitchell The School – Rhode Island just before his 65th birthday. His participation in extracurricular events like Honors Color and Cutting, Design Team, Student Council, and the Mentor program earned him an attendance record of 105%.

Since graduating, Ed volunteers two days a week at a local nursing home, where he serves two clients a day. “All the names of the people of limited means are placed in a lottery,” Ed says. “Once a month, they pick out sixteen names, and those sixteen people receive certificates for a facial, haircut or perm (their choice), blow-dry, hand and arm massage, and a manicure, all complimentary.”

Ed also volunteers once a week at Paul Mitchell The School – Rhode Island. Both the school and the nursing home have offered him jobs, but he turned them down to remain available for his wife, who has Parkinson’s disease. The couple plans to spend winter months in South Carolina, where Ed recently applied for license reciprocity so he can volunteer while vacationing there.

“At Paul Mitchell, we learned that it was all about the individual,” Ed says. “In hairdressing you are giving your undivided attention to one person; you are pampering them; you are adding to their quality of life. In a nursing home, in many cases, that is all that is left. We go out and practice the philosophy we were taught.”

“Ed inspired me from the day he started school, and he has taught all of us a valuable lesson about our responsibility for taking care of the elderly. To truly be nice in the world, let’s follow Ed’s example and love, honor, and respect our elderly. After all, we’re all on our way there someday, too.”

Paul Mitchell Schools Form Green Teams

At the October 2008 Paul Mitchell School Owners Summit, Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh challenged all school owners to form Green Teams in their schools. Some schools have a head start, with active teams already in place.

The Green Team at Paul Mitchell The School – Salt Lake City recently put on a green fashion show with a theme of Earth, Wind, and Fire. Teams had a $10 spending limit, and all materials had to be recyclable.

Paul Mitchell The School – Santa Barbara’s Green Team leads classes on going green and reducing carbon footprints. Other activities have included a competition between Core, Adaptive, and Creative Future Professionals to see who recycled the most. Future Professionals also participated in a local beach cleanup, support their local farmer’s market, and recycle cut hair and Paul Mitchell packaging and bottles. Future plans include adopting a highway and installing a reverse osmosis system to filter drinking water. They also plan to switch to reusable drinking bottles and glasses instead of paper cups. “We are really starting to get this team going,” says School Director Jenn Johnson.
