Dear Future Professionals,

John Paul DeJoria, CEO of John Paul Mitchell Systems, consistently reminds people that we should leave the planet better than we found it. Because I’m equally passionate about saving the environment, it’s one of the things that attracted me to his organization. It’s so important that we save the environment not only for ourselves but also for future generations.

Even if you’re not particularly passionate about the environment, “going green” is good for your pocketbook and it’s good for business. Many of the things you do to “go green” actually save you money. When you reuse something instead of throwing it away, you save money. For example, at our school we put coffee tumblers in our new student kits and encourage Future Professionals to use them at the coffee shop instead of getting disposable cups. This simple action not only minimizes paper waste, it also puts money in your pocket because most coffee shops discount the price by ten or fifteen cents a cup. In the course of a year, that could add up to over $100!

From a commercial or marketing standpoint, “go green” is a hot buzzword right now. Consumers want to do business with environmentally friendly companies. When we tell our prospective students that John Paul Mitchell Systems plants a tree with the purchase of every student kit, we know it makes a difference because today’s consumers definitely care.

Some people think they have to go completely green overnight, but that’s not true. You can start with baby steps. Instead of buying bottled water, fill a reusable container with filtered water from your home. If you’re getting unwanted faxes and junk mail, contact the senders and ask to be removed from their lists. Eliminate unnecessary transportation and shipping materials by purchasing locally made products. Or try any of the other ideas you’ll find in this month’s newsletter!

If everyone made just a small shift in behavior, it would make a dramatic difference. Even the tiniest choices do add up.

John “Jack” Curtin

Accomplished stylist and wig master John “Jack” Curtin earned his bachelor’s degree in performing arts with triple minors in costume design and construction, sculpting, and painting. With a strong background in both fine arts and wardrobe, he landed one job after another with the national touring companies of plays like West Side Story, Anything Goes, It’s a Wonderful Life, and many others.

Seven years later, burned out and tired of living on the road, Jack decided to change careers. Following in his mother’s footsteps, he became a hairdresser and eventually a Senior National Educator for John Paul Mitchell Systems. A few years later he received a call back to the theater and discovered that his combined hairdressing and wardrobe skills made him more in demand than ever. “The more marketable you make yourself, the more employable you will be,” he says.

Jack’s impressive résumé includes Broadway productions of The Lion King, 42nd Street, The Producers, Beauty and the Beast, and Coram Boy, brought over from England’s National Theater. His film credits include The Curious Case of Benjamin Button with Brad Pitt and Kate Blanchett, Joshua, Across the Universe, and Spinning into Butter, an unreleased film starring Sarah Jessica Parker. He has done numerous commercials and TV shows, including Law and Order, Kidnapped, ET’s Insider, ABC News Now, and CSI:NY. Since June 2007, Jack has been working on the Broadway production of Grease, featuring the winners of the popular NBC TV show Grease: You’re the One That I Want.

Magic of Memories FUNraiser Update

Paul Mitchell The School – Houston took an early lead in this year’s FUNraising competition when school owner Rosie Matos created ten paintings and auctioned them off for a grand total of $30,000. Each painting represented a chapter in Be Nice (Or Else!) by Winn Claybaugh. Winn added his hand print and signature to each painting, and the furious bidding soon began. Leeza Gibbons and Robert Cromeans joined in by phone. An ecstatic Winn Claybaugh said, “I can’t believe it! In one night, Paul Mitchell The School – Houston raised more money than any school has ever raised in the entire FUNraising campaign!”


The Larry King Cardiac Foundation has created a special page on their Web site where Paul Mitchell Schools and individual FUNraisers can sign up to track donations, have letters mailed automatically to supporters, and have special prizes mailed to contributors when they hit various levels of support (visit www.lkcf.org/paulmitchell). “Shawn and I are so excited to be working with you on your FUNraisers to help others,” Larry King said, “You all are an inspiration! Good luck and thank you for helping us Save a Heart a Day!”

Five New Schools Celebrate Grand Openings

John Paul Mitchell Systems CEO John Paul DeJoria and Dean of Paul Mitchell Schools Winn Claybaugh took to the skies in January to celebrate grand openings at five new Paul Mitchell Schools.

Owners George and Leslie Brunt, Bill and Donna Waite, Kim and Linda Henrie, and Paul Pandian welcomed Winn, John Paul, and their traveling companions on the first stop of the journey, Paul Mitchell The School – East Bay in Pleasant Hill, California. The school’s Future Professionals presented a “Head for Change” themed fashion show featuring a diverse group of multicultural models in a variety of outfits, from a teenage skateboarder to elegant formal wear. Pleasant Hill Mayor John Hanecak and Chamber of Commerce CEO Charley Daly were on hand for the opening and returned the next day to have the first haircuts in the newly opened school.

In Wisconsin, co-owners Dave and Cathi Simon presented John Paul and Winn with personalized cheeseheads to mark the grand opening of The Academy Waukesha - A Paul Mitchell Partner School. Paul Mitchell The School – Memphis rocked the house with a “beauty and blues” themed opening. Paul Mitchell superstar Alfie Silva made a special appearance as Elvis, Future Professionals presented an Elvis-inspired fashion show with a modern twist, and guests were treated to a down-home feast including traditional Memphis barbecue, cole slaw, and sweet tea.

Paul Mitchell The School – Colorado Springs and Paul Mitchell The School – Portland rounded out the trip with exciting celebrations and packed houses at both locations. Winn recognized Colorado Springs Owner/Director Micah McDougle as “a true testament to all Paul Mitchell Future Professionals because he is a graduate of a Paul Mitchell school who quickly dedicated himself, opened a salon as a Learning Leader in a school, and is now partners with John Paul and me in a Paul Mitchell School. So, Paul Mitchell Future Professionals, set your sights high!”

Portland’s special guests included 2004 NAHA long hair dresser of the year Mark Putnam and 1996 NAHA colorist of the year Crae Hasler-Elliott, two industry superstars and Portland salon owners. When John Paul heard about ten Future Professionals who drove five hours through a snowstorm and arrived too late to join in the fun, he excused himself from dinner to meet the group, pose for pictures, and sign autographs. He then put them up at his hotel and bought them dinner that night and breakfast the next morning. School owner Mario Landino, who accompanied Winn and John Paul on the tour, said “The best part was to see firsthand what a humanitarian John Paul is.”

Paul Mitchell Graduate Opens Focus Salon

Paul Mitchell Joins In Style Magazine for Grammy Salute
to Fashion

Paul Mitchell Future Professionals, graduates, school owners, associates, and salon stylists joined John Paul Mitchell Systems Editorial Director Lucie Doughty at Boulevard 3 nightclub in Hollywood for the first-ever Grammy Salute to Fashion. Presented by The Recording Academy and In Style magazine, the event showcased the Spring ’08 clothing lines of Grammy-nominated artists Beyoncé, Sean Combs, Jay-Z, Jennifer Lopez, Jessica Simpson, and Justin Timberlake.

Lucie and her team prepped 30 models with a casual spring-y twist complementing the vision of In Style fashion director Hal Rubenstein. “We were asked to create a streamline ’80s feel to the hair with the use of products and the addition of extensions, mimicking the fun, carefree rock star feel that the clothes have,” Lucie said. “There was a great vibe in the tent as everyone hustled to get the models ready.”

The event was hosted by four-time GRAMMY-winning producer and Recording Academy Chair Jimmy Jam, along with a special performance by current Grammy winner (and Paul Mitchell Super Skinny addicted) Rihanna. Cover Girl added the makeup touch to the models, while the audience was sprinkled with Grammy winners including Prince, Adam Levine of Maroon 5, Jay-Z, and more.



Team members from Paul Mitchell The School – Costa Mesa included graduates Ashley Baur, Josh Corso, Victor Raygoza, and Noogie Thai; Future Professionals Ebony Murphey, Jessica Azling, and Josephine Chung; and staff member Keli Coltman. Representing the Cao Institute – A Paul Mitchell Partner School were school owner Alee Cao, graduate Vanessa Cao, and Future Professionals Daven Mayeda and Christopher van Zeyl. Lisa Smith and Pilar Bernal from A. T. Tramp Hair Salon in Beverly Hills rounded out the team.

Paul Mitchell The School – Costa Mesa Goes Red


Paul Mitchell The School – Costa Mesa was a sea of red balloons, flowers, clothing, hair, and nail polish in honor of the American Heart Association’s National Wear Red Day on February 1. Service guests included heart attack and stroke survivors, as well as family members participating in memory of loved ones lost to heart disease. Representatives from a local hospital provided free health screenings and raised awareness about the risk factors of heart disease.

Admissions Leader Janet Payne found that partnering with the Heart Association was a powerful way to get the message to the community. “We are educators by nature,” she said, “and the response from the community has been tremendous.”




Future Professionals Lend a Hand at Sundance

Future Professionals from Paul Mitchell The School – Provo, Paul Mitchell The School – Salt Lake, and the San Francisco Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology (SFIEC) – A Paul Mitchell Partner School represented the Paul Mitchell family at this year’s Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.

Members of Provo’s Take Home Team hit the streets to teach the public that giving back is the new black, while Provo’s Design Team members spent the week on the slopes at the Paul Mitchell product sampling tent, honing their product education skills. Top Future Professionals from Provo and Salt Lake were invited to assist at the Paul Mitchell Beauty Cafe in Park City, where they gave free guest services and met John Paul and Eloise DeJoria. Four Future Professionals from San Francisco, who sold $3,000 in a makeup caper event to earn their trip to Sundance, provided makeup services in the celebrity tent.

“It was exhilarating to excite the public about what the Paul Mitchell family gives back and made us proud to be a part of it,” said Future Professional Rebecca Merkling.

Big Sisters Event


The Design Team from Paul Mitchell The School – Houston was invited to provide hair and makeup for the 11-year anniversary gala of Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Houston. The February 8 event featured a star-studded fashion show with designer Vanessa Riley and a silent auction to benefit Big Brothers Big Sisters. Led by Admissions Leader Todd Wise and Learning Leader Thuy Tram, the Future Professionals styled hair for 20 of Houston’s leading celebrities, including Miss Texas Galaxy and top model Iryna Shyshkina.




Xcell Academy Uses Andrew Gomez Funds for Road Trip

Xcell Academy – A Paul Mitchell Partner School closed its doors for an entire Saturday and took their 7 staff members and 48 Future Professionals to Atlanta to celebrate the grand opening of Esani Institute – A Paul Mitchell Partner School.

School owner Robert Brown wanted his Future Professionals to meet John Paul DeJoria and Winn Claybaugh and have the chance to see another Paul Mitchell school, but first he had to figure out how to get everyone there. The school’s student council contacted the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation and asked for a donation. They received $1,000 to charter a bus for the three-hour drive. “The school paid for the drinks, snacks, movies, etc.,” said Sales Leader Erin Greggs. “We watched movies, snacked, and giggled all the way to and from Atlanta. It was a true joy watching our Future Professionals meet John Paul and Winn for the first time. Their faces lit up! We created magic for our Future Professionals that day and gave them an opportunity and memory they will never forget.”





Cosmetology Career Center Sponsors Mexico Mission Trip

Cosmetology Career Center (CCC) – A Paul Mitchell Partner School owner John Turnage, his wife Janet, and their 15-year-old son Conor accompanied three Learning Leaders on a mission trip to Mexico City last summer. Education Leader Kris Densmore, Learning Leader Barbara Brown, and Abby Lee (a former CCC Learning Leader and now Learning Leader Advisor at Paul Mitchell The School – San Antonio) cut and braided hair for over 300 poor people living in what Turnage described as the Mexico City garbage dumps. “Over 200,000 people live in the dumps,” he explained, “and some dumps are worse than others.”



The group was part of a mercy mission with Operation Serve International (OSI), a nondenominational ministry that recruits volunteers to provide medical, optical, dental, personal hygiene, and hair care services to the poor in garbage cities, slums, and remote regions of Mexico and Egypt.

“Winn Claybaugh and John Paul DeJoria both speak of servant leadership,” John said. “I believe that you cannot be a leader without becoming a servant first. This trip was intended to be an example of servant leadership. It was an incredible week that changed the hearts of those who went. Each of us came back revitalized, with a new outlook on life and the challenges we think we have. We all make a choice—to be served or to serve. We choose to serve.”



Students Saving Lives

SFIEC – A Paul Mitchell Partner School partnered with Blood Centers of the Pacific to host a blood drive in December. The nonprofit organization provides volunteer donations to 40 hospitals throughout Northern California.

Over 20 future professionals volunteered. “I always donate whenever I can,” said SFIEC Learning Leader Toni Coleman. After learning that one of the school's own employees had suddenly become ill and needed an emergency blood transfusion, Coleman personally called the blood bank to organize the drive in the name of the employee.

According to BCP, every three seconds, someone needs a blood transfusion, and a mere pint of blood can help up to three people. While about 60 percent of the population are eligible to donate, less than 5 percent do. “Many of our students and staff understand firsthand the importance of blood donation, so we're particularly pleased to show how much we care,” said SFIEC President Deedee Crossett.


Go Green!

Being a responsible citizen in your salon or school, in your community, and on this planet is not always about making money. One way to be a responsible citizen is to become a “go green” professional. Here are some of the ways Paul Mitchell Schools, Distributors, and offices are going green.

After an informative meeting with Paul Mitchell Green Team member Linda Lamb, St. Louis Academy – A Paul Mitchell Partner School switched to metal forks and spoons instead of plastic, installed cost-effective restroom hand dryers, placed recycling bins throughout the school, and added reusable gloves to their student kits. They also recycle empty developer bottles, color boxes, and package inserts, and they save back bar containers for a quarterly recycling/art project.

San Francisco Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology – A Paul Mitchell Partner School supplies coffee and water tumblers in their student kits (200 students + 25 staff x 5 days a week x 48 weeks = 54,000 paper cups/water bottles per year). They placed convenient recycling bins near every copy machine and in the offices and kitchens. Future Professionals break down their student kits, separate the paper and plastic, and walk it to the recycling bin on the first day of school. Students and staff can bring in used batteries, CDs, cell phones, computers, and other electronic waste and the school covers the cost of the recycling fee.
 
John Paul Mitchell Systems reimburses employees who replace ordinary incandescent bulbs with compact fluorescent (CFL) bulbs in their homes. As part of the “new employee” package, new employees can take advantage of the offer for the first three months of their employment.

More than 2,600 square feet of rooftop solar panels produce enough energy to heat and cool both buildings and run the electrical appliances for German-based Paul Mitchell distributor Wild Beauty AG. Surplus energy goes to a regional power system and generates a refund. Wild Beauty AG also sponsored a solar system for their local public swimming pool. In the past their village paid almost $30,000 a year for its heating. Now solar pipes heat 3 million liters of water.

Carolina Academy – A Paul Mitchell Partner School


Tina Calhoun had a rough start in life. By 1996 she’d been expelled from two high schools, gotten into drugs, and found out she was pregnant with her first child. That discovery prompted her to get sober, and she’s stayed sober ever since. However, two more babies and five miscarriages over the next seven years took their toll on her health. By 2005, Tina had three kids, a husband whose job often kept him away, no money, no car, and barely enough food on the table. Just when she thought things couldn’t get worse, her son was diagnosed with autism.

“I wanted to help him so bad but financially I couldn’t, and emotional help was a major struggle for me,” Tina says. One morning in January 2007, she just sat at her kitchen table and cried. “All of a sudden a thought came to me,” she recalls. “Life is only as hard and negative as you let it be! That day I decided to change my life.”

Tina realized she could pursue her longtime love of art by doing hair. She enrolled at Carolina Academy – A Paul Mitchell Partner School, where her sister is a Learning Leader and Paul Mitchell Associate. “I didn’t know how I was going to make it work, but I signed up anyway,” Tina says. Her family initially opposed the idea, but her husband changed jobs, her mom helps with the kids, and her dad chips in gas money—a huge bonus, considering that Tina commutes one hour each way. With her family’s support and a lot of hard work, Tina is now a member of the Design Team and Phase Two.

On her first day of school, Tina received and immediately read Be Nice (Or Else!). She calls the book an instruction manual to have the greatest life you ever dreamed of. “I knew I could have it,” she says. “I just didn’t know how until I read the book. I still don’t have any money or a car that doesn’t break down every two weeks or a working air conditioner in my home or more than 50 bucks a week for groceries, but I feel great! I wake up each morning thankful for my children and the life I know I’m going to give them. When I get out of school, we will build our dream home, we will drive a brand-new car with an air conditioner, Prezton will get the best therapy there is, Anastazia will go to school and own her own veterinary clinic, Jazmin will be whatever she wants to be, and I will love every second of life!”

Ron Wolek, Class of 2006
Paul Mitchell The School – Orlando

As a high school student, Ron Wolek worked in the Walt Disney World makeup department. He earned an associate degree in graphic arts, but realized that printing was not his dream career. After an internship with the Orlando Opera makeup department, he spent a year at a local cosmetology school before transferring to Paul Mitchell The School – Orlando.

A third-generation hairdresser, Ron admits he was not a model cosmetology student. “After I graduated from school, I was doing the starving artist thing, always moving in and out of my parents’ house,” he recalls. “Around New Year’s 2007, I read Be Nice (Or Else!) and that totally changed my attitude and approach to the hairdressing business. I knew I was talented and I was a good person but I wasn’t getting where I should be, so I started to apply that.”

Although it took Ron a while to get through school and earn his license, his career soon skyrocketed. He’s done stints as assistant makeup artist for the New York City Ballet, hairdresser for the Disney cruise line, freelance designer of his own theatrical shows, and head of the Orlando Opera makeup department. In a paid apprenticeship with Orlando special effects makeup artist Tom Blasco, Ron worked on several projects for Walt Disney World before becoming manager for entertainment cosmetology at Disneyland in August 2007. Since graduating, he has returned to teach stage makeup techniques to the Paul Mitchell The School – Orlando Design Team. Because of Ron’s connections, the Design Team has the opportunity to do makeup and wigs for the Orlando Opera each season.

Ron’s advice for Future Professionals:
  • Stay in school!
  • Take time to learn from experienced hairdressers. They can teach you styles and techniques you won’t learn anywhere else.
  • Be respectful of your senior stylists and be gracious of any time they’re kind enough to give you. When someone takes time to tell you what’s wrong with a haircut, take it as a blessing of advice that you just can’t pay for.

Tips from the Paul Mitchell Green Team Newsletter

Reduce, reuse, recycle! The brainchild of John Paul Mitchell Systems President Luke Jacobellis, the Green Team brings all divisions of John Paul Mitchell Systems together to help the planet. Every two weeks, representatives from Paul Mitchell The School, John Paul Mitchell Systems, and the field brainstorm new opportunities to change actions and mind-sets—setting standards from small actions to take in the office to larger strategic initiatives. From using greener hotels and rental cars to packaging decisions, the Green Team helps the company band together to make change second nature—in the office, at home, and in everything we do.

January’s Green Team Newsletter included some great tips for reducing water waste:
  • Steaming showers. On average, every minute under the shower uses 4 to 6 gallons of water. Cutting down your shower time from 10 to 5 minutes saves more than 4,200 gallons of water each year. Insulating your hot water tank and lowering the thermostat on your water heater can eliminate over 1,000 pounds of greenhouse gases.

  • Brushing your teeth. If you leave the water running while brushing your teeth, that’s about 3 minutes on average twice a day. And for those folks who like the water nice and warm . . . yeah, you get the picture. Turning the water off while brushing your teeth can save tremendously on your water consumption.

  • Dishwashers. Sinks and dishwashers account for about 15% of average household water use and hundreds of pounds of greenhouse gases. Run the dishwasher only when it is completely full.
