How We Change and Save Lives

Dear Future Professionals and Industry Friends,

As a new, excited, and eager school owner, I was surprised at my first Paul Mitchell School Owners Summit when Winn Claybaugh announced the Quitters and Losers Club. I watched with quiet humility as the beautiful, trendy Paul Mitchell people stood proudly to claim their titles as quitters and losers. I understood the concept of making a commitment to lose weight or quit smoking, and I made a secret goal right then to become Paul Mitchell’s biggest loser!

I had tried for years to lose weight. I can’t even begin to count how many pounds I’ve lost and gained, but I made it my goal to lose 150 pounds before my new school opened. It would be a life change that would give me more confidence, hopefully a longer life span, better health, and mostly the physical endurance needed to build and open a successful school.

By the time I attended my fourth Owners Summit, I had accomplished my secret goal. It has definitely been a life change and I feel fantastic. My new problem was how to keep the weight off, so I bought a bike. After riding it for one week, I decided to make a new crazy goal: to join the great-looking Team Paul Mitchell Schools who bike the AIDS/LifeCycle ride each year. (Doesn’t every 57-year-old decide to ride 545 miles along the California coast?)

The secret is out and this is my new goal. I feel the love, support, and encouragement of the Paul Mitchell family, my family, and the Reno Academy. I am working out and riding and sweating a lot. I am going to give every bit of strength and determination I can find. I am very humble and realistic about the outcome but you never know unless you try. I have been crocheting and selling scarves to earn the entrance fee. To date I have sold 70 scarves. I was very proud when Vivienne Mackinder donated to my cause.

What are your secret dreams and impossible goals? Whatever they are, go for it! You’ll be amazed at what you can do!

George Papanikolas

George Papanikolas is fast becoming one of Hollywood’s hottest and most sought after colorists. Having just returned from a 10-week tour as Britney Spears’ personal hairdresser for her 2009 Circus concert tour at the time of his MASTERS interview with Winn Claybaugh, George continues to catch the attention of celebrities and media alike. His signature highlighting style appeals to Southern California’s most discerning clientele, including Hollywood stars like Hayden Panettiere, Megan Fox, Rachel McAdams, Mila Kunis, Sarah Michelle Gellar, and Minka Kelly.

A relative newcomer to the beauty industry, George earned a bachelor’s degree in marketing and then worked in advertising for several years. “I was good at it, but not passionate,” he says. Realizing he had always loved doing hair, George switched gears and went to beauty school. After gaining three years of incredible work experience at some of Beverly Hills’ top salons, he is now an in-demand color specialist at the Andy Lecompte Salon in West Hollywood. His styling and color work has landed him numerous national magazine photo assignments, film projects, music videos, and fashion shows, resulting in a vast and sophisticated portfolio. As a result, his chair is the first stop for many of the models being launched by L.A.’s hottest agencies.

Whether you dream of becoming a celebrity stylist like George, doing editorial work, or being the best salon stylist you can be, this is one MASTERS interview you won’t want to miss. George generously shares the simple, everyday steps he took, like writing handwritten thank-you notes to every new client, and sitting down in the next chair to develop relationships with clients instead of escaping to the break room while their color processes. You’ll learn how to make a great impression on an interview, become a great assistant, develop a great reputation, attract an agency to represent you, and much more.

Paul Mitchell Schools Raise $100,000 for Haiti Relief

In immediate response to Haiti’s devastating earthquake on January 12, 2010, Paul Mitchell Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh called for a nationwide fundraising day. “Our goal is $1,000 per school, times our 100 schools, for a total of $100,000,” Winn announced.

The schools rose to the challenge and raised over $83,500 within two weeks. A personal donation from John Paul DeJoria, chairman and cofounder of John Paul Mitchell Systems, brought the total to $100,000.

Future Professionals broke from their signature black outfits to hold “Casual for a Cause” days, donating money to dress casually for the day. They also invited family, friends, and guests to “buy” paper bottles for Haiti relief and held a number of other activities, from bake sales and benefit concerts to donating their tips from the day.

Winn also challenged every family, individual, salon, and organization to do something similar. “Get organized, active, and involved,” he said. “I’ve often heard people say, ‘Somebody should do something.’ Well, YOU are that somebody. You can make a difference, and I hope that you will!”

25th Caper Event Rocks Las Vegas

For the 25th year, Paul Mitchell Future Professionals used their sales skills to earn their way to Caper, a star-studded annual educational event. Over 2,000 Paul Mitchell cosmetology and skin care Future Professionals sold $2 million in Paul Mitchell products to attend the three-day Las Vegas event, where they received hands-on classes with the Paul Mitchell and Advanced Academy Artistic Teams and educators. Skin care Future Professionals also had a day of education at the Dermal Institute.

The smoke-free and alcohol-free event featured fashion presentations from Lunatic Fringe Salon, Angus M Salon, and A Robert Cromeans Salon, plus a traditional Paul Mitchell “white party.” Renowned inspirational speaker Kathy Buckley, Hollywood hairstylist Dean Banowetz, John Paul DeJoria, Angus Mitchell, and Robert Cromeans were among the many presenters. Donny and Marie Osmond made a surprise onstage appearance to thank Future Professionals for supporting the Children’s Miracle Network in this year’s FUNraising campaign.

“In my 27-year career, I have never experienced such energy and passion at an event,” said Paul Mitchell Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh. “Caper is one of our Paul Mitchell School traditions that I love the most. Once our Future Professionals graduate and move on in their careers, they will attend a variety of industry shows and events. Our Paul Mitchell School Caper will always remain different because we focus on building self-esteem, helping our Future Professionals visualize their potential, and exposing them to mentors and heroes who are touchable and approachable.”

Franchise Business Review Names Paul Mitchell Schools #1

Franchise Business Review announced the winners of its 2010 Franchisee Satisfaction Awards. Paul Mitchell Schools was named #1 in the “Top 50 Franchises – Midsize Systems” category and “Best in Category – Health and Beauty.” Last year’s winner in the same category was Jenny Craig!

Each year, the national franchise market research firm surveys franchisees to determine their satisfaction with their franchisor’s performance. Paul Mitchell Schools scored an average satisfaction rate of 89.57%, while the overall satisfaction score of all franchisees surveyed was only 64%.

“For us to be recognized for setting a standard of upgrading and improving the perception of the beauty industry is truly an honor because this is an industry that I truly love and respect,” said Paul Mitchell Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh. “To also be recognized by our wonderful franchisees means that much more. I would not know how to do things any other way than to make sure that my partners in the Paul Mitchell School business are happy, successful, and also in love with the beauty industry.”

Paul Mitchell Schools are no strangers to the Franchise Business Review awards. In 2008, they were named “Best in Category – Health and Beauty” and #2 in the Top 50 Midsize category.

Robert Cromeans Honored at Legends and Icons Ball

John Paul Mitchell Systems Global Artistic Director Robert Cromeans was honored January 30, 2010, at the National Cosmetology Association’s international Legends and Icons Ball.

This year, the association bestowed the designation of Legend on Ann Mincey, veteran Redken executive and mentor and role model to countless salon professionals. Icon awards were presented to Robert Cromeans and to Sonya and Christopher Dove, creative directors for Wella Professionals.

The Legends and Icons Ball celebrates the creative talent that makes the professional salon and spa industry so unique. The evening of cocktails, dinner, and dancing benefited the NCA Cares Fund, which supports Look Good…Feel Better, Cut it Out/Salons Against Domestic Abuse, and the NCA Disaster Relief Fund.

New Angus M Salon Is Already Turning Heads

Since its opening in October 2009, Angus Mitchell’s Beverly Hills salon, Angus M, has gotten plenty of attention.

Women’s Wear Daily (www.wwd.com) praised its bright, airy design and Angus’s commitment to hiring graduates from the nearly 100 Paul Mitchell Schools.

Angeleno magazine called it one of the world’s only ionically balanced salons, “where everything from the Arizona mud-covered walls to the hair dryers is negatively charged to leave locks shiny.”

City Search put “Look good” at the top of its 2010 New Year’s Resolutions, and pointed readers to Angus M Salon, saying, “Of course, you can’t expect to keep your resolution to look good if that unfortunate impulse you had in 2009 for the ‘Rihanna’ has left you with something more akin to the Mrs. Brady mullet. Enter this new kid on the 90210 block. Although the salon’s pedigree is pretty impressive (it was started by Paul Mitchell’s son), the vibe is totally laidback and decidedly unpretentious. And the prices? Try haircuts that start at just $55 and come with the salon’s signature ‘Ionic Wash House Ritual’ that goes way beyond the basic shampoo-and-rinse experience.”

John Paul DeJoria Donates Solar Car to Petersen Museum

The Petersen Automotive Museum in Los Angeles gained a new resident on January 11, when John Paul Mitchell Systems chief executive John Paul DeJoria donated the Mana La solar car.

Built in the late 1980s for the inaugural World Solar Challenge race in Australia, the Mana La was one of 23 cars from seven countries entered in the 2,000-mile race from Darwin to Adelaide. The Mana La dropped out due to rough terrain and low wind power.

Measuring 6.5 feet high and wide, and 19 feet long, the vehicle ran on sun and wind energy. John Paul, whose Hawaiian home is also powered by sun and wind energy, attended the installation launch along with actor Peter Fonda and other luminaries. The Mana La will remain on display through May 2010.

Vanguard Shows Saints Spirit

Future Professionals at Vanguard College of Cosmetology – A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, rallied together to make a fabulous “Go Saints” banner. “We are so proud of our NFL team that we felt it imperative to devote a day of support to them,” said Admissions Leader Megan Babin. The banner might have done the trick and helped the Saints win the Super Bowl!

Vanguard also kicked off their first night school program, welcoming nine new Future Professionals to the school. “We are so excited to finally be able to offer this to our prospective Future Professionals,” Megan said.

Lab Cut-a-Thon Supports Grade School

The Lab – A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Ewing, New Jersey, co-hosted a cut-a-thon with Parkway Elementary School, whose students finished 11th in the world in the Odyssey of the Mind contest. The cut-a-thon raised over $150, to be split between the two schools. Parkway will use their half to send this year’s Odyssey team to the annual competition in Michigan, and the Lab will use theirs to benefit the Paul Mitchell Schools’ annual FUNraising campaign.

“In the spirit of FUN-raising, Parkway Elementary School encourages their students to work at all their events to learn what it takes to raise money,” said Lab Director Shari Polk. “We have plenty of jobs to do, so we put them right to work. They greeted, swept, and cleaned; you name it, they did it! Our Future Professionals had so much fun having them here and created some serious magic. We are so excited to have built this relationship and plan to work together in future events!”

Paul Mitchell Schools Launch Annual FUNraising Campaign

Over 10,000 Future Professionals joined Winn Claybaugh and co-hosts Robert Cromeans and Stephanie Kocielski for nationwide conference calls to launch the Paul Mitchell Schools’ 2010 FUNraising Campaign. Special guests Leeza Gibbons, Larry King, Donny and Marie Osmond, John Paul DeJoria, and Angus Mitchell introduced this year’s supported organizations, which include the Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation, the Larry King Cardiac Foundation, Children’s Miracle Network, Food 4 Africa, and the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation.

Each year, Paul Mitchell Future Professionals spend the months of February through April raising money and awareness for charitable causes close to their hearts. The schools’ efforts over the last six years raised nearly $3.4 million via cut-a-thons, charitable fashion shows, and a host of other hands-on, grassroots “FUNraisers.” This year, the network’s goal is $1.2 million.

As in past years, the top 20 FUNraising schools will win an artist or educator in their school for a day. This year, the top 10 Future Professionals who raise the most money in pledges and donations will be flown to Southern California to attend the Magic of Memories Dinner. (Contact your school owner/director for details.)

For some, this year’s campaign really hits close to home. “My husband Randy and I are so excited about partnering with Donny and Marie Osmond for the FUNraising campaign,” said Sharida Burkholder, owner/director of Paul Mitchell The School – Indianapolis. “Our first baby girl was born with a rare birth defect and flown to a Children’s Miracle Network Hospital. Randy and I give yearly to this wonderful organization that gave us the opportunity to spend at least three days with Danielle before she passed away. We can’t wait to support this cause that is dear to our hearts.”

“Life’s tough, and a lot of people go through really difficult times and challenges,” Marie Osmond said on the call. “When you are in service to somebody else, when you get out of your own sorrow and help somebody else, there is nothing that makes you feel better.”

Visit www.magicofmemories.com to see highlights from last year’s Magic of Memories Dinner, learn more about the supported organizations, and hear special messages from Leeza Gibbons, Larry King, Donny and Marie Osmond, and John Paul DeJoria.

2009 Donation Provides “Fran Vans” for Cancer Schmancer

In a project funded partly by a $100,000 donation from Paul Mitchell Schools’ 2009 FUNraising campaign, Fran Drescher’s Cancer Schmancer Foundation has teamed up with Inner Images, whose vans provide breast screenings at over 120 Los Angeles locations. The new “Fran Vans” will provide thousands of low-income, uninsured women with free cancer screenings and gynecologic cancer educational materials, as well as free early detection breast cancer screening for 1001 women ages 29 to 40 who may be at risk with a family history of breast cancer.

Inner Images now provides over 750 free screenings per week. With the funding from Paul Mitchell Schools and support from the Los Angeles community, they aim to raise the number to over 1,400 per week.

“If it wasn’t for ALL of your schools last year, we would not have been able to even start this big program,” said Cancer Schmancer Special Events Coordinator Susan Holland. “But we can and did and launched, from your generosity and support.”

Colorado Springs Future Professionals Host TESSA Fundraiser

After listening to Winn Claybaugh’s MASTERS Audio Club interview with domestic violence expert Jeri Linas, three Future Professionals at Paul Mitchell The School – Colorado Springs decided to do something. “We felt the need to help raise money for something so tragic, since all three of us had gone through abuse,” said Future Professional Kate Cummings. Within three weeks, they organized a fundraiser for TESSA, a Colorado Springs foundation dedicated to helping women and children and ending sexual and family violence.

Kate’s father, who has ties to the radio industry. helped them obtain a Miley Cyrus signed guitar plus signed CDs and posters. A local restaurant donated food, and a speaker from TESSA educated the audience about abuse. Staff members and Future Professionals donated additional gifts, served food, and put on a fashion show that raised $1,000.

Paul Mitchell Schools' Architect Gives Back

Inspired by the “give back” culture of Paul Mitchell Schools, architect Dave Frith partnered with members of the Laguna Beach surf industry to set up an after-school surf club for children of military families. Committing 10% of his own income and a block of time to the “CPK,” or Camp Pendleton Kids surf club, Dave also recruited sponsors to help fund the program and pay for insurance, equipment, and payroll for licensed, certified instructors.

What started as a way to teach a few kids to surf has grown to nearly 50 kids or “surf groms.” Meeting twice a week at the Camp Pendleton military base, the group consists mostly of junior high and high school kids whose fathers are serving overseas. “The after-school surf club has meant so much for our military kids and their parents,” said military mom Maranda Hill, who helps organize the club.

The group is organizing five surf competitions this spring, at various beaches in Southern California. Proceeds will help to support CPK and enable future growth.

“It’s been incredible to watch the surf instructors come alongside these kids during this challenging time in life,” Dave says. “I am living an incredibly blessed life through the opportunity of supporting the Paul Mitchell Schools network.”

Marketing 101
By Curtis Whipple
President of the American DJ Association, Phoenix chapter
Owner of the Wedding and Event Network (www.curtiswhipple.com)

Last Christmas, I was hired to provide music and announcements for a retail promotion at a local mall, featuring a giveaway of $10 gift cards. I was situated across from a couture handbag company and, within five minutes, the store manager flew out the door to complain about the music. I referred her to the mall management, who had hired me and placed me in front of her store, and I turned the speakers in a different direction, but she gave me the stink eye the entire time I was there.

Meanwhile, a nearby chocolatier dispatched an employee with a basket of chocolates and a coupon for everyone in line for the gift cards. I gave them a “shout out,” saying how delicious the chocolate was and pointing out their kiosk.

After another round of complaints from the handbag lady, I mentioned that she had 200 shoppers in front of her store and was complaining instead of inviting them in. She flatly concluded that nobody standing in a line for a $10 gift card could possibly be a customer in her store.

When the event ended, I visited the chocolatier and they thanked me for the announcement. They said that 37 gift cards were spent at their shop and the average purchase was $41—adding nearly $1,600 to their regular sales in that time.

I recently provided music on a couple of Saturday mornings at a Paul Mitchell School, just as a “freebie.” It makes a fun school day for about 120 young women and men who may be getting married in the coming years and might need a professional DJ like myself. We were having lots of fun when a woman came running over with a towel around her neck and a bunch of foils in her hair. She said she was having a party soon and hadn’t considered hiring a DJ, but she was having so much fun that she wanted to hire me.

Had I done what the handbag lady did and concluded that nobody getting a free haircut could afford my professional fee, I would have missed out on a $1,500 off-peak event with a $200 gratuity. Her daughter is a student at the Paul Mitchell School and was practicing on Mom’s hair that day. It turns out, Mom lives in Arizona’s wealthiest ZIP code and the party was loaded with wealthy socialites.

In your marketing efforts, you never know where the million-dollar customer may be hiding.

Blake Dufault, Class of 2010
Paul Mitchell The School – Orlando

Only halfway through school, 25-year-old Blake Dufault has already set some really big goals. “Education is my passion,” he says, “that’s the direction I want to go.” It’s not surprising, since Blake comes from a long line of teachers including his grandparents, parents, an aunt, and a cousin.

“Anything I can possibly do to get where I want to go, that’s what I do,” Blake says. “Study, practice, stay after school, help out, volunteer.” He’s not exaggerating: he’s on the Design Team, student council, Phase Two, Take Home Team, Green Team, and Be Nice (Or Else!) Team, as well as working on the honors curriculum and requirements for making the Dean’s List. He’s also working on building a portfolio with professional photographers and planning a video bio.

Blake’s “say yes” attitude landed him an invitation to assist the Advanced Academy team and be a guest artist at another cosmetology school. “After graduating with honors and making the Dean’s List, I would love to work at a Paul Mitchell School and work toward my four levels of certification in cutting while educating myself,” Blake says. “I would love to be invited to join the Advanced Academy as a cutting specialist, as cutting is my passion, and ultimately become a Paul Mitchell National Educator and a member of PAC. A wise man once told me, ‘Find a job you love and you will never work a day in your life.’ Another wise man said, ‘Stay humble and hungry.’ These are some of the many quotes I live by, and I truly believe in them.”

Blake’s advice for Future Professionals:

  • Say yes to everything. You’ve heard that a million times, but it’s so true. Your school days are the most important time to do everything and excel in it.
  • If you have a dream, go get it. Don’t be afraid to tell people what you want and ask for help.
  • Nothing is impossible if you set your mind to it. Write down your goals (that makes them real) and prioritize. How do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time!

“Blake puts the V in Visionary. Always smiling and ready to say yes if he even thinks we’re going to ask for something, he hungers for education and then wants to give it away. Wherever Blake goes, he will add a bright light; hopefully it will be in one of our schools or salons. Words cannot express what a great man he is and what a great impact he will make in our industry. Blake: the next top hairdresser in our world!”

— Giulio Veglio, Dean
Paul Mitchell The School – Orlando

Amanda Wido, Class of 2009
Paul Mitchell The School – Danbury

A mere six months after graduating from Paul Mitchell The School – Danbury, Amanda Wido holds the position of co-director of the Special Creature and Makeup Effects Department for Area 51 Productions, a Washington-based film company.

Since being terrified at the age of five by Michael Jackson’s “Thriller” video and watching the “Making of” special afterwards, Amanda wanted to do one thing professionally: become a makeup artist. After graduating from Joe Blasco Makeup Center East in Orlando, Florida, she enrolled in cosmetology school.

“I thought the additional education would be the responsible thing to do,” Amanda says. “I didn’t particularly like hair, couldn’t do my own, didn’t ever do anyone else’s, but I could operate a pair of scissors well enough and knew how to use a paintbrush, so how hard could it be? My first day of Core, I realized I had involved myself in something much bigger than chopping off chunks of hair and slapping on some dye. It was a culture. A way of living your life the best way you can, always looking to improve, and always looking to help others. My teachers were amazing. I quickly picked up new skills and gained a clientele. When my teacher said my ideas were great and I should run for president of student council, I did. And I won!”

At school, Amanda organized fundraisers, helped kick off Caper, sold Caper bags to earn an educational trip to Las Vegas, became educated on the war in Uganda, taught makeup classes, earned Student of the Month, and says she “kicked butt” in Phase Two. “More important than all of that was what I learned about myself,” Amanda adds. “I am beautiful. I am strong. And I am able to make a difference: in myself, for someone else, and for the world.”

Amanda says her new job is “an amazing opportunity and a lot of responsibility. Could I have done it before Paul Mitchell The School and the love and encouragement I received there? Maybe, but I would have been terrified, unsure, and insecure. Now I say bring it on and watch me change the world!”

Amanda’s advice for Future Professionals:

  • Embrace the Paul Mitchell culture.
  • Don’t be afraid to talk to your teachers about any problems you’re having; they’re here to help you learn and they want to see you succeed.
  • Believe that you can be great!

“Amanda was one of the truest visionaries we’ve had in a long time. She embraced the culture full-heartedly, always had a smile on her face, and never said no to anything hair-wise. She always stepped outside of the box and I think that’s what’s taken her so far already.”

— Lloyd Simmons, Core Learning Leader
Paul Mitchell The School – Danbury

Salt Lake City Green Gear

Paul Mitchell The School – Salt Lake City Green Team Learning Leaders KT Wright (day school) and Jessica Bauer (night school) came up with a great “green” FUNraising idea.

“We kept seeing hundreds of water bottles around our school that were not being recycled,” KT says, “probably 50 a day in our mannequin rooms, Core rooms, and lunchroom. We decided to do something about it as a Green Team.”

Their cool new Green Team water bottles and coffee mugs have been a big hit and a successful FUNraiser for the 2010 FUNraising campaign. “They’ve really taken off and made a big difference at our school,” KT says. “Now when we look out at our Future Professionals, we see that most are holding the metal bottles. They almost all have them!”

Entry fee for a recent movie night was a Green Team water bottle. A nearby coffee shop owned by school owners Shawn Trujillo and Angie Katsanevas also supports the campaign with a 20% discount on beverages purchased for Green Team bottles or mugs.
