Dear Future Professionals,

In my professional life, I’ve always had a vision of what I wanted to do and where I wanted to go. I enjoyed a successful career as an educator for various manufacturers, a stylist with Vidal Sassoon, the owner of a chain of salons, and eventually vice president of education for John Paul Mitchell Systems. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to do as well in my personal life until recently. Because of my lack of discipline, I was very unhappy, I had a tendency to be a little egotistical, I abused some substances, and I was in numerous personal relationships. My life was a mess until I discovered that you move toward what you focus on.

As I gained more personal discipline, I grew to like myself better, and because I liked myself better, I was a nicer person to be around, a better friend, and I’ve been privileged to be a mentor to many people. A Paul Mitchell education gives you not only skill training but helps you develop the attitude that makes you successful. Being in our culture changes you to a more positive, more forward-focused person. As you change, your expectations rise and you do the things to meet those expectations. I think the secret to success can be summed up in three steps:

  1. Develop personal discipline: Do your homeplay assignments. Get up on time. Come to school whenever it’s open. Treat other people with respect. Don’t allow your personal life to interfere with your attitude.

  2. Pay attention: Be present. Have a learning attitude, which means being open and willing to take a chance. Listen with the intent to understand. Let go of your ego and don’t worry about making mistakes. Assume that behind every human behavior there’s a positive intention.

  3. Expect a lot of yourself: Practice these skills just like you practice your haircuts. You have to unlearn your bad habits, just like you had to unlearn holding scissors or lifting hair incorrectly.

To be successful in your personal as well as your professional life, you have to train your mind the way you train your hands. Life is a journey of never-ending education.

NINA KOVNER
COSMETOLOGY: A GROWING INDUSTRY
A multitude of exciting career choices await the professional cosmetologist. You can design high-fashion hair for the runway, become a celebrity stylist, or work in print photography, television, opera, theater, ballet, or film. As your career progresses, you can become a platform artist, salon or spa manager or owner, educator, manufacturing consultant or artistic director, or retail specialist.

In addition to hair design, the industry offers opportunities in skin care, makeup, aromatherapy, nail artistry, and sales and marketing. Estheticians are working for plastic surgeons and dermatologists, doing facial services, waxing, and assisting. Nail technicians are working in medical spas with podiatrists. Cosmetologists can work in fields ranging from research and development to copywriting and journalism for the beauty industry.

With an exceptional educational foundation, you’ll be able to choose from unlimited opportunities.

Nina L. Kovner, senior vice president of marketing for John Paul Mitchell Systems, started her career as a stylist in an upscale hair salon. She expanded her expertise to include advanced education for other stylists, brand management, sales management, and field marketing. After more than 17 years in the professional beauty industry, she is currently responsible for all aspects of marketing all John Paul Mitchell Systems brands, creating innovative national and international brand marketing strategies, trend analysis, market positions, and corporate marketing.

A firm believer in lifelong education, Nina earned her certificate in business management from the UCLA Anderson School of Business in 2005. She sits on the President’s Advisory Council for the National Cosmetology Association, and she set a new benchmark when she was the first hairdresser ever inducted into the Career College Association Hall of Fame.

GRAND OPENING:
PAUL MITCHELL THE SCHOOL – SHERMAN OAKS

The newest Paul Mitchell Corporate School, located in the Los Angeles area of Sherman Oaks, California, recently celebrated its grand opening. Co-founders John Paul DeJoria and Winn Claybaugh joined the staff, Future Professionals, and hundreds of guests for the December 18 ribbon-cutting ceremony at the school’s Sherman Oaks Galleria location.

The 15,000-square-foot steel and glass open studio space was designed to train up to 400 Future Professionals at a time. Winn Claybaugh said, “Although we now have more than 75 Paul Mitchell Schools across the U.S., it's not about 75 buildings. It’s about 75 relationships with Paul Mitchell School owners who truly love their Future Professionals.”

DEVELOPING EFFECTIVE TRAINING
From Be Nice (Or Else!) by Winn Claybaugh

Just because “education” is happening doesn’t necessarily mean learning is taking place. There can be many blocks and barriers to effective training. For example, researchers now know that there are many different types of learners, yet a lot of educational programs speak to only one type of learner. Another barrier to effective training is fear, which can be the result of old, traditional educational experiences. Perhaps a grade school teacher told you many years ago that you were a bad reader, or maybe you were made to feel stupid for asking a question in a high school class, and those experiences created barriers of fear that keep you from learning effectively today.

Education can be quite expensive, and for some companies the money they spend to educate their people is like throwing pasta at the wall—sometimes it sticks and sometimes it doesn’t. Education has one purpose: to change behavior. If, after a training session, nothing new is implemented and nothing changes, then the education and the money were wasted. However, as Vidal Sassoon says, “If you think education is expensive, try ignorance!”

To properly train people requires removing any blocks or fears and making education a fun experience. At Paul Mitchell Schools, we’ve developed our Guiding Principles for the Ultimate Learning Experience, made them into posters, and hung them in every school location for all to read, study, believe in, and follow.

MICHIGAN FUTURE PROFESSIONALS ASSIST
AT MALY’S HAIR SHOW

Future Professionals from two Paul Mitchell Schools in Michigan gained valuable educational experience when they assisted backstage at Maly’s hair show in Grand Rapids last November. “Great Lakes Academy is always given the opportunity to allow a couple Future Professionals to assist at the Maly's hair shows,” says school owner Tina Black. “Because of Winn Claybaugh, we were able to get two additional Future Professionals to assist Beth Minardi for the first time.”

Michelle Lozon, from Paul Mitchell The School, Sterling Heights, and Christina Hagel, from the Great Lakes Academy Paul Mitchell Partner School, were chosen to assist industry legends Beth and Carmine Minardi at the event. Julie Bixler and Cassie Wright were both chosen from Great Lakes Academy to assist Scott Cole, Linda Yodice, and Kelly Cardenas in their classes.

“I was probably most amazed by the amount of preparation and work that goes into putting on a show like the Maly’s show,” Bixler says. “Being a part of it all (even in a small way) is probably one of my biggest highlights since becoming a Future Professional.”

Hagel adds, “We did a lot of running around and helping whoever needed it. We rinsed out a lot of color, handed foils and stuff like that. Carmine Minardi was amazing. I'll never forget the cut he did on stage in less than a minute. It made me cry. How down to earth and fun Beth, Carmine, and the entire Minardi team were. That is what I will ALWAYS remember.”

“What an incredible experience this is, especially for our Future Professionals who aspire to be platform artists. They get to meet and work with their mentors and see how they work under pressure. The opportunities we receive as Paul Mitchell Schools are endless!”

“The students you sent to help us were absolutely professional in all aspects. These young ladies are destined for success. I have seen the careers of thousands of hair professionals in my 32-year career, and I must say that the Paul Mitchell students you turn out have the most essential ingredient for success: passion! Congratulations on having the formula to mold these young professionals into valuable assets to our great industry, and thank you for sending such talent our way.”

CK PAIK, CLASS OF 2006
Paul Mitchell The School – Costa Mesa

Until 1994, CK Paik was a professional ballet dancer in his native Korea. In his early 20s, CK moved to the United States with nothing but two suitcases and began dancing full-time in New York. Two years ago, he realized he couldn’t dance forever and started thinking about changing careers. After assisting a hairstylist friend in New York, he began to look at the beauty industry.

“One summer day I walked past a salon in Manhattan. Watching the stylist through the window, I was so touched that someone was trying so hard to make someone else look good and feel good about themselves. A few weeks later, I left New York and my dance career behind. When I got to California, I came to visit Paul Mitchell The School. I walked in the front door with the music pounding, the videos playing, the students all dressed in black, styling hair, and I couldn’t breathe! The energy of that place was like a shock to my body. All I could think of was, I am HOME!”

After graduating in 2006, CK became a stylist at Hedonism Salon and Day Spa, a Paul Mitchell Focus Salon in Santa Monica. “I took this job because I wanted to work with the Paul Mitchell family,” CK says. “The education I received at Paul Mitchell The School is the best education I’ve ever had. I learned more than just how to be a better hairdresser; I learned how to be a better person, too. Sometimes people ask me, ‘How did you get such a big clientele?’ or ‘How come you get such big tips?’ I love to share my secret, because it’s so simple and easy: I just had to LEARN what the teachers said and then DO IT!”

CK recently started down the Advanced Academy career path. “I am so excited to be getting my education with great people from Paul Mitchell The School and to share my knowledge when I get through this program,” he says. “Advanced Academy will train me to represent the Paul Mitchell technique and our culture. I love being a member of the Paul Mitchell family, and I have put every penny of my tuition to work for me.”

“Early in his journey at Paul Mitchell The School, CK wrote something I would love to share: ‘I stand for quality and excellence in everything I do. If I expect to begin this new career, then I must be able to give everything of myself to achieve it. It requires doing my best at every moment and finding a balance to enjoy the rewards.’ It was a joy to be one of his personal mentors.”

— Janet Payne
Sales Leader, Paul Mitchell The School, Costa Mesa

“My wife and three beautiful daughters are rightly quite particular about their hair. A bad experience makes everyone miserable, me included, so entrusting them to a new stylist is never done lightly. CK was highly recommended, and he exceeded all the glowing praise I had heard. Not only was he a fantastic technician with a great style and flair, he was a hit with my girls. All four of them were thrilled with the results, which was no easy feat. CK is the best!”
