Dear Future Professionals,

I get hundreds of e-mails a week from Future Professionals across the country asking me to help them land their dream job and connect them with people who can make their dreams come true. I have them e-mail me about their career goals, but mostly I want to know what they’ve accomplished while they’ve been in school. In this month’s audio message, Dermalogica founder Jane Wurwand comments that no one’s ever asked her for her résumé. Potential employers know that anyone can make a résumé look good. Instead, they want to know that you’ve said YES.

Have you said yes to the following?

  • Did you enter Beacon?
  • Did you sell your bag deals to participate in a Caper?
  • Did you enter the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA)?
  • Are you on the Design Team, Phase Two, Student Council, or Take Home Team?
  • Do you come early and stay late?
  • Do you pick up cigarette butts outside, even though you’re not a smoker?
  • Are you willing and able to take on any task, assignment, or request?

How well you can do hair, nails, and skin care may be at the bottom of the list of importance for potential employers. They want to know if you’re willing to say yes. When they ask you to come in on your day off to clean up the dispensary, or stay late to help with the models for a fashion show, or participate in a salon fundraising event, will you say yes?

I get e-mails from Future Professionals saying they want to do hair and makeup for fashion photography, only to find out that they’ve never done their own photo shoot. When I ask why not, they sometimes respond with, “Well, nobody’s hired me yet.” I then ask, “Do you have a camera? Do you know someone who has a camera? Do you know someone who has hair?” Produce your own fashion shoots. Experiment with them again and again, 100 times. Once you get that down, maybe somebody will hire you.

Let 2008 be your year. Let this be the time where you shed your high school attitude and muster all the energy and passion you need to say yes to your future. Let this be the year where you show the entire beauty industry that yours will be a career worth talking about!

Paul Mitchell Schools Launch FUNraising Campaign

For the fifth consecutive year, Paul Mitchell Schools will spend the months of January, February, and March raising money for worthwhile causes. In the past four years, the schools have raised over $1.4 million through cut-a-thons, fashion shows, and a host of other successful “FUNraisers.” This year’s proceeds will benefit four amazing organizations:
  • THE LEEZA GIBBONS MEMORY FOUNDATION provides vital education, empowerment, and energy programming to an ever growing population of family caregivers and resources for those newly diagnosed with chronic illnesses through its intimate, community-centered Leeza’s Place locations.

  • THE LARRY KING CARDIAC FOUNDATION provides funding for lifesaving treatment for individuals who, due to limited means or no insurance, would otherwise be unable to receive the treatment and care they so desperately need.

  • FOOD 4 AFRICA strives to supply at least one vitamin- and mineral-enriched meal each day to the children of South Africa, where more than a million preschool children do not receive sufficient food.

  • THE ANDREW GOMEZ DREAM FOUNDATION provides new salon professionals with educational experiences they probably would not otherwise have for many years to come and helps disadvantaged or hard-hit cosmetologists and cosmetology-related enterprises.

Winn Claybaugh will host kickoff conference calls on January 31 (night school) and February 1 (day school), with special guests Leeza Gibbons, John Paul DeJoria, CNN’s Larry King, Angus Mitchell, and Robert Cromeans. Midway conference calls will take place in April.

The campaign’s highlight will be the annual Magic of Memories dinner and auction, held April 26, 2008, at the Island Hotel in Newport Beach, California, and hosted by Leeza Gibbons, Larry King, and John Paul DeJoria.

Holiday Food Drive Helps Feed the Hungry in Los Angeles

John Paul Mitchell Systems’ Beverly Hills and Santa Clarita offices held a holiday food drive in December to benefit the LA Food Bank. The Beverly Hills office collected 55 pounds of food, the Santa Clarita office collected 75 pounds, and Paul Mitchell The School – Costa Mesa donated 100 pounds of food. Paul Mitchell The School – Sherman Oaks collected 250 food items by holding a “Donate 5 Cans of Food and Wear Jeans to School Day.”

Does Your School Have a Be Nice Or Else Team?

For several years, Paul Mitchell school owner Tina Black has had Be Nice Or Else Teams at her two Michigan-based schools. After helping Future Professional Erika Kunzler form a Be Nice Or Else Team at the Scot Lewis Paul Mitchell Partner School in Boise, Idaho, Tina recognized the need for every school to have a team. “It’s as critical as having a Take Home Team, Design Team, or Student Council,” she says. “It’s what we are all about.”

Using her allocated funds from the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation, Tina sent two Future Professionals to the Carolina Academy - A Paul Mitchell Partner School to help them establish a team. “They were treated like rock stars and they signed up 42 Future Professionals,” Tina says. “I’m sending four Future Professionals to Illinois next week and I have plans to set up teams in New York, California, and anywhere else that wants to have some magic. I hope that if I train schools, they in turn can train additional schools in a ‘pay it forward’ manner.”

John Paul Mitchell Systems CEO John Paul DeJoria often says, “We believe that 70% of all working adults between the ages of 18 and 50 years old go to a hairdresser on average of once every three months, which means that hairdressers touch 70% of society. If every hairdresser adopted this philosophy, we could change the world.”

All schools are invited to start a Be Nice Or Else Team and participate in national monthly conference calls led by Erika Kunzler. “The conference calls create synergy among the schools by uniting them under one national Be Nice Or Else Team,” Erika explains. “As we teach the concept of BE NICE to those in our schools and in turn to our customers, we will indeed make a mark on the world. There is so much good to be done, and so many good people in our schools to do it.”

For more information about creating a Be Nice Or Else Team at your school, contact Erika Kunzler at erika.beaut@gmail.com. To sign up for the Be Nice (Or Else!) Newsletter, CLICK HERE.

SCHOOLS IN THE NEWS

Paul Mitchell Schools Create Holiday Magic

Four times a year, Learning Leader Advisor Annette Tutalo from Paul Mitchell The School – Rhode Island takes Future Professionals to the state mental hospital to create magic. About 25 of them joined her just before Christmas to change lives. “These patients who have been discarded by society due to mental illness received haircuts, manicures, and even dreadlocks,” said school dean Veronica Rendina. “They felt beautiful for that day. Our Future Professionals were also changed. They were very quick to get over the initial awkwardness of the visit and started to touch people with their healing hands. They got that rush that daymakers do when they are creating magic!”
For the second straight year, Core Learning Leader Julie Pettengill from Great Lakes Academy of Hair Design – A Paul Mitchell Partner School took her Core class to the nearby Sam’s Club to sing Christmas carols and ring the bell for the Salvation Army. “The Future Professionals really love it,” Julie said. “I will do it every year with my December class. It is a great way to give back to the community, especially since we are so blessed.”

Paul Mitchell The School – Santa Barbara
Celebrates Grand Opening

School owners, staff members, and Future Professionals throughout the Paul Mitchell Schools network joined Paul Mitchell The School – Santa Barbara to celebrate their January grand opening. “Santa Barbara is such a beautiful place and the strength of the hairdressing community there is so strong that we always knew we would one day open one of our schools there,” said Paul Mitchell School Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh. “A night of pouring rain could not put a damper on our beautiful grand opening, and the packed house that night from salons, the mayor, and the business community all added up to the perfect launch for a Paul Mitchell School that I know will make a huge difference.”

Among the attendees was Global Salon Business Award recipient and entrepreneur Walter Claudio, whose Walter Claudio Salon Spa is one of the top salons in Santa Barbara. “We feel blessed to have Winn and Paul Mitchell The School in our community,” he said. “The commitment to excellence was evident at the grand opening, from the quality of the Paul Mitchell tribe to the design and location of the facility. The Paul Mitchell culture of education will have an enormous impact in the lives of many who are seeking a career in the beauty industry. I am looking forward to promoting the school to as many as possible!”

Paul Mitchell The School – Santa Barbara is dedicated to Winn’s parents, Donn and Jeanne Claybaugh. A special plaque presented to the school reads:

Paul Mitchell The School – Tampa Future Professional to Compete in Miss Florida Pageant

Katie Sharer, a Future Professional on leave from Paul Mitchell The School – Tampa, won the title of Miss Winter Park and will advance to the Miss Florida competition this summer. The 20-year-old beauty queen won her first pageant at the age of 16. Her other titles include Florida Strawberry Festival queen, Little Miss Plant City, Florida Strawberry Festival Junior Royalty queen, Miss Tampa, and Miss Florida Hometown USA. If she wins Miss Florida, she will advance to the Miss America pageant.

Katie’s platform as she pursues Miss America is Go Serve, a charitable organization she founded with the help of her mother and brother. Go Serve matches volunteers with charities that need help.

Katie plans to graduate from Paul Mitchell The School in April. She has also been working as wardrobe coordinator for fashion and pageant photographer Deb Knoske.

Michael’s School of Hair Design and Esthetics – A Paul Mitchell Partner School Gives Miss New Hampshire a Day of Beauty

Rachel Barker, the reigning Miss New Hampshire, enjoyed a day of beauty at Michael’s School of Hair Design and Esthetics – A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Bedford, New Hampshire. The visit was made possible by the networking efforts of the school’s newly formed Design Team, consisting of Future Professionals Stacy Conroy, Aimee Bernard, Alexandra Gomes, and Arthur Nirgianakis.

The Design Team and the school’s admissions team met Rachel at a local business fair and talked about supporting her in the Miss America Pageant in Las Vegas on January 26, 2008. Thanks to Arthur’s dynamic networking skills, Rachel scheduled a day of beauty to try out different looks for the competition. Aimee spent many hours creating styles and giving Rachel several options for the pageant. Admissions Leader Dottie Lewis said, “Adding Rachel Barker to our team created magic and supported our mission: When people come first, success will follow!”

Create a Dream Board
From Be Nice (Or Else!)

I’m sure that many of us would agree that our minds work more in pictures than in words. Yes, it’s valuable to write things down (if you think it, ink it), but how about the pictures of what makes your heart sing? How about creating a dream board?

Either on your own, or with your family and friends, gather up as many types of magazines as you can find—fashion, architectural, travel, health, automotive, or whatever interests those in your group. For each participant, provide a large poster board, scissors, and glue. Turn on some fun or inspirational music, and maybe order in some pizza. (As you can see, I’m encouraging you to make this a fun activity, not some homework-type chore.)

Look through the magazines to discover pictures of what makes your heart sing. Perhaps it’s a picture of your dream car. Maybe it’s a photograph of a person who has the type of body you want. Maybe you’ve always wanted to take a Paris vacation, and while thumbing through a magazine, you find a photograph of the Eiffel Tower. Cut out those photos and glue them to your dream board.

Stephanie Monroe, a Future Professional from
Paul Mitchell The School – Costa Mesa, created this dream board

Avoid judgments of what should or should not be added to your dream board. When that little voice in your head tells you, “Oh, I shouldn’t want that expensive car,” ignore it and listen to your heart instead. If it makes your heart sing, it belongs on your dream board. Your heart is your God-given, built-in measurement to appraise and gauge the future direction of your life—a life filled with purpose and happiness.

Once you complete your dream board, post it somewhere in your home or workspace to remind you of your new programming goals. Negative, self-doubting images can pop into your mind unannounced and uninvited, but your dream board will help you cancel them out. Make sure it’s highly visible, so you’re in control.

John Sparks, Class of 2008
The Temple – A Paul Mitchell Partner School

On October 7, a select team of Future Professionals from The Temple – A Paul Mitchell Partner School joined Director of Advanced Education Christian Riser on a trip to New Orleans to take part in building two Paul Mitchell School homes with Habitat for Humanity. Future Professional John Sparks shared his experiences of the trip.

“Driving through New Orleans, it looked like Katrina just hit yesterday,” John said. The group stayed with 200 other volunteers at Camp Hope, a school that was damaged by the storm and has since become a home base for volunteers. “The camp had fully working showers, Internet, a mess hall—everything you could need and more,” John said.

On Monday morning, the group made the one-hour trip to their work site, only to find it closed because of rain. So they got back into their van—which was covered with “Free Hugs” signs—and headed for the local Paul Mitchell distributorship where Christian purchased about $900 worth of products and gifts for the volunteers. “After we got back to the camp, we took guests from 4 PM until about 1 AM,” John explains. “We did everything from haircuts to highlights. Every volunteer was so excited. Some of them haven’t ever had a salon experience in their lives. That’s when I truly felt like a day maker.”

Day two started at 6:30 AM, when the team headed back to the job site. “We worked for hours hammering and cleaning up, then it started to rain again so we packed up and headed back to camp to do more hair,” John says. When they stopped for more supplies, Mark Palermo, owner of the Slidell school and distributorship, donated $400 in products. Christian and John set up their stations and did hair until 2 AM. “We were beat but the thank you’s and the smiles were well worth it,” John said.

For the next two days, Christian was a guest artist at the Baton Rouge and Slidell schools. “We got to see our mentor teach some classes and I even got to cut some hair,” John said, “That’s when I decided I wanted to be an educator. The trip to New Orleans was amazing. This opportunity paved the way for me to really give back outside of the industry. The people I met along the way and the relationships I developed reconfirmed why I chose to join the Temple – A Paul Mitchell Partner School.”

“What an amazing opportunity that was given to us by Winn Claybaugh and Vidal Sassoon. The team that was chosen are true visionaries. We are so lucky to have them in the Paul Mitchell family!”
– Sharon Riser
Sales/Admissions Leader, The Temple – A Paul Mitchell Partner School

“I am so proud of our Future Professionals and what they accomplished. We helped build two homes and were day makers to the volunteers at Camp Hope. It was a week filled with lots of love and laughter!”
– Christian Riser
Director of Advanced Education, The Temple – A Paul Mitchell Partner School

Gloria Wesson, Class of 2007
Paul Mitchell The School – Orlando

Even as a child, Gloria Wesson was passionate about skin care. Growing up in East Germany, behind the iron curtain, she watched her mother and grandmother make essential oils, tinctures, and healing ointments in their kitchen. Her grandfather, a pharmacist, taught her the Latin names of all the plants. “Everything from tummy aches to bruises was healed with plants,” she says.

Since East Germany did not provide an environment where Gloria could pursue a skin care profession, she earned a business degree and worked in a corporate environment. She was 20 years old when the Berlin wall came down in 1989. “A lot has changed since,” Gloria says. “I moved to the former west side of Berlin, I traveled the world, and I even met my American husband in Berlin. In January 2005, we moved to Orlando together. When I came to Orlando, I felt that I was finally in a place where I could make my dreams come true.”

Gloria and her husband Paul founded Skindred Soul (www.skindredsoul.com), a skin care line for people with extremely sensitive skin, rosacea, inflammatory acne, and eczema. She enrolled at Paul Mitchell The School “because people in the business told me it would be an advantage to say that an owner and founder of a skin care company was a licensed aesthetician.” Gloria soon realized that she loved being an aesthetician. “It was like a light went on in my head. I want to educate people so they’re able to make good choices when they pick their skin care line and make people happier because they have healthy and beautiful skin. That’s my mission.”

Gloria’s young company currently consists of an online store and six products. She has a full-time day job, then spends nights and weekends filling orders, working on her Web site, and developing new products. “We’re still young and have to get our name out there, but we’re making progress,” she says.

Gloria’s advice to Future Professionals: Believe in your passion and your dream. If you find something you love, believe in, and are passionate about, you’re going to be good at it.

“Gloria was one of the most dedicated skin care professionals we have ever had in our program, and she was a great mentor to other Future Professionals and staff. Her willingness to help others was always apparent and her drive and dedication will make her successful.”

Director of Paul Mitchell The School – Orlando
