Dear Future Professionals and Industry Friends,
You may have heard that Paul Mitchell and I started John Paul Mitchell Systems with $700. It’s a true story. During those first few difficult weeks, I sold products door-to-door and slept in my car. You know that old saying, when the going gets tough, the tough get going? I got going and did some out-of-the-box thinking. You’d be surprised at what you can find if you try, like $1 breakfast specials and 99 cent happy hours where appetizers are served. Twenty chicken wings later, you can be full from a dinner that costs a dollar or two. (Be sure to have an extra 50 cents for the tip because the person serving you is probably going through some tough times, too!)
During those early days, a lot of people asked me to come and consult with their companies while we built our own. It was tempting, especially when we were really low on money, but I always said no. My focus was on building our company, and nothing else could get in the way. Did we struggle during tough economic times? You’d better believe we did. When we started the company in 1980 and 1981, unemployment was 7%, inflation was 12%, interest rates were 20%, and people were lined up around the block just to buy gasoline. We didn’t know there was a brutal recession going on or how difficult the times were because we had no time to watch TV. We were 100% focused on building our company.
You don’t need a lot of money to become successful. The best thing you can do is learn how to focus. We’re in a great profession. Even in a tough economy, people never stop coming to the salon. They may delay their visits by a week or two, but there’s always business. The best way to attract people is with a big smile. People love to be around happy people, so make happiness and health your top priorities and success will follow.

Stephen Epstein
Citing the sobering statistic that half of all college-age students start their professional lives with high-interest credit card debt, Stephen Epstein believes that financial problems can ruin health and relationships, destroy creativity, and trap people in dead-end jobs. Stephen knows what he’s talking about because he dug himself out of credit card debt and created a system for avoiding debt, managing money, and prioritizing spendingall before age 27. Paul Mitchell Schools Take Center Stage
at Stylist Choice Awards
John Paul Mitchell Systems and Paul Mitchell Schools were well represented at Behind the Chair’s 9th annual Stylist Choice Awards on June 9. Dancing to a remix of Michael Jackson’s “Thriller,” Paul Mitchell Future Professionals wowed the audience of more than 2,000 salon professionals and corporate VIPs at the Rosen Center in Orlando, Florida. Paul Mitchell Co-owner Angus Mitchell, Global Artistic Director Robert Cromeans, and Paul Mitchell Artistic Director Stephanie Kocielski were among the 50 award presenters who graced the stage as Paul Mitchell Super Skinny was named Favorite Nonchemical Straightening Product and the Paul Mitchell company was added to the Hall of Fame.
Paul Mitchell Schools were among this year’s event sponsors. In a surprise move, Behind the Chair Founder Mary Rector Gable and Paul Mitchell Schools decided to give Paul Mitchell’s sponsorship money to Paul Mitchell graduate Michelle Kelly and her family, along with a special Hairdressers Unlocking Hope award. Michelle, who was featured in the first edition of behindthechair.com On Paper, overcame abuse and homelessness and is working to build a better life for herself and her daughters.

Salon Today’s Salons of the Year 2009 Includes
Paul Mitchell Grad
One year after opening Robert Cris Salon and two years after graduating from Paul Mitchell The School San Diego, Robert Galster achieved an honor that countless owners dream of but very few achieve: Salon Today magazine named his Robert Cris Salon one of their Salons of the Year 2009.
The magazine’s editors, designers, and art directors, along with additional special guest judges, selected a grand-prize winner, three runners up, and 16 Salons of Distinction. In naming Robert Cris as a Salon of Distinction, the judges called it “a canvas for the creation of transformation” and noted its “very client-friendly design.”
Robert designed and opened the 2,000-square-foot Delaware salon in December 2008. The ultra-chic environment includes 13 styling stations and a color formulation area, and it carries Paul Mitchell products.

Costa Mesa Grad Takes 2nd Place
in IMATS Student Competition
Tuesday Hammerl, a graduate of Paul Mitchell The School Costa Mesa, nabbed second place in the 2009 International Makeup Artist Trade Show (IMATS) student competition. Tuesday currently attends Leonard Engelman’s Cinema Makeup School in Los Angeles, California.
Hosted by Make-Up Artist magazine, the annual IMATS student competition selected 16 finalists from thousands of worldwide entries. Tuesday’s award-winning work in the Fashion/Fantasy category appears in the magazine’s July-August issue.

At Paul Mitchell The School Jacksonville, Paul Mitchell Texture Specialist LaDonna Dryer took Future Professionals to a museum-gallery-floral garden to teach them about finding inspiration based on texture, then invited them to a friendly mini competition. Future Professionals Carley Simeone, Meghan Maranto, and Ashley Sparkman sculpted model Kenya Dixon’s hair to win first place.

Santa Barbara Future Professionals Tour Paul Mitchell Lab and Offices
Future Professionals from Paul Mitchell The School Santa Barbara paid a visit to the Paul Mitchell laboratory, warehouse, and offices in Santa Clarita, California. “We had an amazing time seeing where all of the wonderful Paul Mitchell products are made and distributed,” said School Director Jenn Johnson. “It was great to see how happy everyone is at Paul Mitchell. Everyone who went is hooked and wants to someday work there!”
Paul Mitchell Vice President of Operations Erik Pedersen said, “The Future Professionals are an important key to the bright future of our industry and John Paul Mitchell Systems. We are a stronger organization today and will continue to grow because of the Future Professionals and all the energy, talent, and enthusiasm they bring. Vanguard Campuses Hold Hair Battle
In a heated competition hosted by school owners Mark and Lisa Palermo, Future Professionals from the Baton Rouge and Slidell campuses of Vanguard College of Cosmetology A Paul Mitchell Partner School duked it out in their first Hair Battle. Admissions Leader Megan Babin said, “This is the caliber of Future Professionals that the world of Paul Mitchell should be on the lookout for.”

Tampa’s Be Nice (Or Else!) Team Holds Toy Drive
In just three weeks, the Be Nice (Or Else!) Team from Paul Mitchell The School Tampa collected over 260 toys for St. Joseph’s Children’s Hospital of Tampa. “The look on their faces was priceless,” said Admissions Leader Becky Ingram. “Some of these children have not been out of bed in a long time and some of them have been playing with the same toys for a very long time. It was fun to share that moment with them.”

Bella Capelli Academy Adopts Nursing Home
Each month, Admissions Leader Ben Pusateri takes eight to ten Future Professionals from Bella Capelli Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Monroeville, Pennsylvania, to the Golden Heights Personal Care Home to do nails and be daymakers for the residents. “We create amazing energy when we walk into their home as a little army of young, slick-looking Future Professionals all dressed in black,” Ben says. “We greet everyone with a huge smile and they love it.”
Ben says the key to a successful “adoption” is a great relationship with the facility’s activity director. “We have our schedule preset for the entire year,” he says. “Both Bella Capelli Academy and Golden Heights eagerly anticipate the visit each month. They probably don’t know it, but Golden Heights makes our day more than we make theirs!”

John Paul Pet Clubs Spring into Action

The Ohio Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Columbus, Ohio had some fur-raising fun at their June 27 dog wash. The event launched the school’s new John Paul Pet product line while washing 40 dogs and raising $150 for Shelter Outreach Services, an organization that provides low-cost veterinary services to the humane society and the public.

At Paul Mitchell The School Great Lakes, Service Desk Coordinator Amanda Stevens and her new John Paul Pet Club have already established a great relationship with their local humane society. The society brought some of their adoptable dogs to the pet club’s launch, and club members will volunteer at the shelter every month as part of their focus on community outreach.

Paul Mitchell The School Houston Gives Clips for Kids
Admissions team members, Learning Leaders, and Design Team members from Paul Mitchell The School Houston joined Paul Mitchell Sports Marketing for a charity cut-a-thon in May when the AVP pro beach volleyball tour came to Houston, Texas. The group raised $1,868 for Food 4 Africa, an organization dedicated to supplying at least one meal a day to the children of Africa. “Everyone was absolutely amazing, had great energy, and did a fantastic job representing the school and the Paul Mitchell culture,” said Paul Mitchell Sports Marketing Coordinator Kalena Nordgaarden.
On June 1, Houston’s Be Nice (Or Else!) Team created magic by providing haircuts and styles for patients, parents, and siblings at the Houston Shriners Hospital for Children. “This experience was amazing in so many ways,” said Learning Leader Advisor Tracy Fredericksen, who led the group of Future Professionals. “It felt great to give back to those in need, and it made us all feel so grateful.” Shriners Hospitals for Children provides innovative research, outstanding teaching programs, and specialty pediatric care in a family-centered environment at no financial obligation to patients or their families.

Parisian Beauty Academy Gives New Look, New Life
For the past 13 years Martie Santiago worked as an office manager for Dr. Richard Santucci, a Hackensack, New Jersey, chiropractic physician. On June 18, Martie’s birthday, Dr. Santucci and his wife Linda treated Martie to the ultimate day off: a beauty makeover at Parisian Beauty Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School. Her makeover included the works, from haircut, color, and style to manicure, facial, and makeup, plus a new outfit from the Santuccis and a birthday cake and rousing chorus of “Happy Birthday” from the group. A teary-eyed Martie said, “I can’t believe it’s me. I’ve never had anything like this before in my life!” The Santuccis were equally thrilled. “Kudos to Parisian,” Linda Santucci said. “She looks great. We’re so happy for her!”
For the third year in a row, Parisian Beauty Academy Future Professionals and staff offered an evening of beauty and fun to the moms and children of Mentoring Moms, a county program that provides mentoring, parenting skills, and emotional support to struggling single mothers and their children. More than 45 moms and over a dozen kids were treated to professional salon services they ordinarily could not afford when Parisian Future Professionals participated in the hugely successful event. “Our Future Professionals, Learning Leaders, and staff are so thankful to be given the chance to help make a difference in people’s lives,” said Admissions Leader Jane Villar.

Love Your Bills!

 When it comes to getting smart in a confused economy, Louise Hay, one of my favorite authors and mentors, offers some great financial advice. In her book, You Can Heal Your Life, she says that our prosperity (or lack of it) is an expression of what we believe about money. In my family, for example, my dad was rarely home because he worked so hard. I developed the impression that he worked so hard because he loved us, and for quite some time I believed that money showed love.
A lot of people have unhealthy relationships with money. Many think that bills are bad. They open the mailbox, spot a stack of bills, and instantly get angry. Louise tells us to love our bills. “A bill is an acknowledgment of our ability to pay,” she writes. “The creditor assumes you are affluent enough and gives you the service or the product first.” In other words, your bills show that someone believes in you enough to offer their products and services before you even pay for them!
Here’s a home-play assignment guaranteed to change the way you look at your bills. Instead of griping and groaning when it’s time to pay, how about throwing a bill-paying party? I’ve done this many times with my friends, and we turned a dreaded task into an experience of gratitude. Get your friends together and have them bring their checkbooks. Order pizza and play loud, fun music as you all write out your bills. Kiss the checks as you stuff them into their envelopes. Write “XOXO” in the memo line to brighten the day for whoever opens each bill.
Remember, you get what you focus on. If you concentrate on lack and debt, then you only produce more lack and debt. Or, as Louise Hay says, “If you pay with love and joy, you open the free-flowing channel of abundance.”

Brian Haire, Class of 2008 The Lab A Paul Mitchell Partner School
While traveling around the country and holding down a variety of jobs, 25-year-old Brian Haire noticed something about his life. “The one constant seemed to be that no matter what I was doing, at night I was doing everyone’s hair,” Brian recalls. Living in Alabama at the time, he started looking into beauty schools. When he moved back to New Jersey to take care of his ailing grandmother, he checked out the Lab A Paul Mitchell Partner School and instantly fell in love.
As a Future Professional, Brian submerged himself in everything the school had to offer. He was Student Council vice president, Design Team captain, and a member of the Take Home Team. He also served as creative master for a spectacular charity hair show.
“I learned so much from the show,” Brian says. “Managing myself, my time, other people. Bringing in outside help, like the Paul Mitchell educators from our area. Finding out how to bring everyone’s creativity together. It was a fantastic experience that encompassed everything you learn in school into one really cool event.”

Brian finished school in December 2008 and officially graduates this month. He currently works as an apprentice at La Jolie Salon in Princeton, New Jersey, and hopes to someday work in a top New York Paul Mitchell Focus Salon.
About the current economy, Brian says, “I’m using what’s going on in the economy to get more experience faster. More people are looking for cheaper cuts and color, coming in at the apprentice prices. If there’s downtime because the salon is slow, that’s more opportunity for us to watch a DVD or pick up a mannequin and help each other practice. You can see it in our salon. If a couple of people don’t have anything to do, they’ll practice a blowout. You can always get better.”
Brian’s advice for Future Professionals: Step back and realize the amazing opportunities available at your fingertips. Take in every ounce you can, while you can.
“Brian exemplified everything about the Paul Mitchell culture and took it to the next level. His creativity led to many exciting ideas and events at the school, including an incredible fashion show that kicked off a fantastic FUNraising season. He is a true visionary and every school should be so lucky to have a Brian as a part of their student body. I look forward to hearing about his many accomplishments as a salon professional.”

Daisy Chavers and Stevie Covart, Class of 2008
Paul Mitchell The School Jacksonville
At Paul Mitchell The School Jacksonville, best friends Daisy Chavers and Stevie Covart did everything together. They were in Phase Two, Student Council, Design Team, and Take Home Team, so it comes as no surprise that they opened a salon together.
Days after their December 2008 graduation, Stevie and Daisy opened Oscar and Lula’s, a Paul Mitchell Focus Salon in Jacksonville, Florida. Drawing on everything they learned at school, plus their own experience as salon guests, they developed a winning formula for a fast-growing business. Stevie credits Paul Mitchell The School with teaching her the importance of balance and harmony in hair design. She uses these principles every day to create hairstyles that meet her clients’ needs and desires. “After all, a terrific haircut and color is everyone’s best accessory,” she says.
“The biggest thing we absorbed from the Paul Mitchell culture is that we’re here to talk about our clients’ hair and to educate them,” Daisy says. “Yes, we talk about their kids and everything else, but periodically throughout the service we go back to their hair.”
With its unique product exchange policy, the young salon has quickly grown from three to six chairs and a manicurist. “If someone buys a product and they’re not completely happy with it, we feel that we have not properly taught them to use it or we improperly prescribed,” Daisy explains, “so we have them bring it back and switch it for something else. In the whole time we’ve done it, we’ve probably had two products switched out.”
Daisy and Stevie’s future goals include growing the business and finding ways for the business to give back.
Their advice for Future Professionals:
- Make the most of every opportunity. Do anything you’re asked to do.
- Use your spare time to find something new to learn.
- School goes by quickly. Your experience will be whatever you make of it.

After assisting in various salons for three years, 33-year-old Michael Snider knew he wanted a life in hairstyling. He graduates from Paul Mitchell The School Santa Barbara in August 2009 and hopes to find his dream job at a Paul Mitchell salon. His video shows what he can do and where he wants to go. He even wrote the music: a song about life behind the chair and being thankful for your mentors. Inspired by the movie The Secret, Michael says, “Whatever I think and present is going to happen. I created this video to show people that I’m willing to be that good.”

Shop and Swap: Looking Your Best in Recycled Clothes

People have all kinds of excuses about why they can’t look their best. As the saying goes, if you’re good at coming up with excuses, you’ll never be good at anything else!
Here’s a win-win idea that’s good for you, good for your pocketbook, and good for the planet: Explore the possibilities of wearing recycled clothing. Armed with some great shopping and saving tips, plus a little help from your friends, you can look your best without breaking the bank.
- Hold a school-wide clothing exchange. Do you have a closet full of gently used clothing that you don’t wear anymore, but someone else might love? Invite staff members, Future Professionals, and even your guests to bring their clean, semi-used clothing to school and swap to your heart’s content.
- Hold an in-school garage sale. Similar to a clothing exchange, this version raises money for a good cause. Set up tables and invite everyone to donate and shop at your in-school sale. Proceeds can go to charity, school events, or other worthwhile causes.
- Recruit a wardrobe mentor. Some people have the natural gift of walking into a thrift store and leaving with five amazing outfits for under $100. Do you know people who dress impeccably every day but can’t possibly have the budget to spend big bucks? Find them and ask how they do it, and have them take you shopping.
