Dear Future Professionals,
The human experience is highly individual and yet wonderfully universal. As Martin Luther King Jr. said, “We may have all come on different ships, but we’re in the same boat now.” So how do we maximize our lives and what we leave when our bodies are put to rest?
As a member of the Paul Mitchell School family, you know those answers better than most because you’re part of an industry and an organization that values human kindness and places interpersonal relationships at a premium. Whether you develop business or create hairstyles, your industry is brilliantly informed by a sense of compassion and humanity. That’s what brings us together for the 4th annual Magic of Memories event to benefit the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation, Habitat for Humanity, and the Leeza Gibbons Memory Foundation.
We live in a time when the antics of celebrities eclipse the efforts of Nobel Prize winners. Many in our society worship at the house of the 4 Dsdrugs, divorce, disease, and destruction. Yet we gather to celebrate another D word: determination. It seems to be in the DNA of every person in the Paul Mitchell world. The money and awareness raised from the Magic of Memories event will directly benefit countless hundreds of people. But it’s not just the recipients of this goodwill who get a transformative experience. Every time you individually or collectively extend yourselves on behalf of another, there is a type of jet stream that pulls people into your orbit and influences them to also become the change they wish to see in the world. Philanthropy has the ability to attract like-minded people who believe that “what goes around, comes around” and who do what they do because it’s the right thing to do.
This year I am especially proud to stand with John Paul DeJoria, the incomparable Vidal Sassoon, and my dear friend Winn Claybaugh as we hold hands with each of you to create the world we really want.

Vidal Sassoon

Founder of the international company that bears his name, Vidal Sassoon recognizes the plight of low-income families: his own childhood memories include living in a London orphanage for six years before and during World War II. Today the legendary hairdresser and philanthropist is helping others avoid such a fate.
The Hairdressers Unlocking Hope Campaign, founded by Sassoon and behindthechair.com founder Mary Rector-Gable, intends to raise enough funds from the hair care industry to build a village of houses for post-Katrina and Rita families through Habitat for Humanity. Sassoon personally donated $100,000 to build two new homes for Jessica Silve, a single mother with six children, and Stephen and Alicia Hendrix, who had been living in a FEMA trailer park with their two sons.
Paul Mitchell Schools are proud to support Vidal’s call to help in their 2007 Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation nationwide fundraising campaign. Future Professionals across the country are raising money through Magic of Memories FUNraisers. “The overwhelming success of our Paul Mitchell Schools makes us feel that we must be as proactive in giving back as we are in building our school business,” says Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh.
“I’m not sure a lot of young people are aware of it but there was a real Paul Mitchell,” Sassoon says. “He worked for me in London and New York. He was one of my guys. He then went on to build with John Paul DeJoria a wonderfully exciting business that has always included the necessity of giving. It is a pleasure to work with the spirit of Paul and the Paul Mitchell Schools team in this very noble cause, Habitat for Humanity.”

Paul Mitchell Schools Are the Best!
We always knew Paul Mitchell Schools were great and now everyone else knows it, too! Check out these “Best Of” awards our schools and school owners have received.
- Paul Mitchell The School San Diego was named “Best Salon” in San Diego’s City Beat magazine in 2005.
- Paul Mitchell The School Costa Mesa was named “Best Hair Salon” by the OC Register newspaper in its “Best of Orange County ‘06” article.
- In its “Best of Rhode Island” competition, Rhode Island Monthly magazine’s readers and publishers picked Paul Mitchell The School Rhode Island for “Best Hairdo” in 2004 and "Best Facial" in 2006. Michael Galvin, the school’s director, was named Entrepreneur of the Month in Me magazine in March 2007.
- Paul Mitchell The School Provo was named third best trade school in Utah County’s Daily Herald “Reader’s Choice Awards 2006.” They were the only cosmetology school on the list, which included colleges and universities.
- Giulio Veglio, dean of Paul Mitchell The School in Orlando and Tampa, was named an Honored Member of the Heritage Registry of Who’s Who 20072008 Edition for his accomplishments and achievements in the field of education.

We've Done It Again!
For the second consecutive year Paul Mitchell Schools have been named to the Franchise Times Fast 55 list, recognizing the fastest growing franchises in America. In 2006 we made a fabulous entrance to the Fast 55 at the number 7 position. This year we moved up to number 6 and are the youngest company in the top 10.
Franchise Times calls the Fast 55 list “that diamond lanethat designated lane on major highways that only carpoolers can use . . . Not only are they pressing the pedal to the medal in terms of growing their system, but they’ve got a clear road ahead, because they’ve included passengers (franchisees) on their trip.”
To be selected for the Fast 55 a franchise brand must have been practicing for five years or less and show positive franchised unit growth for each year during this period. This award for two years running, coupled with the Franchise 50 2007 ranking as number 7 in franchisee satisfaction, clearly shows that “the way we do things around here” is a great formula for success.

Anyone Can Be a Philanthropist

Giving and raising money are the two most obvious ways to be a philanthropist, and both can be a lot of fun. Our creative Paul Mitchell Future Professionals have come up with some innovative FUNraisers for their philanthropic pursuits.
- Torture a Teacher: Future Professionals and local businesses paid $1 per yard of duct tape, then used it strap one of the school’s Learning Leaders to the wall.
- Donate Love: For every contribution, donors wrote their names on a heart that was displayed in a local business.
- Topless Car Wash: Customers flocked to this one, only to learn that topless meant “We don’t wash the top of your carbut for an extra donation, we will!”
- Bail Me Out of Jail Day
- Buffet for the Cause
- Pie-throwing contest
- Cut-a-thons with celebrity guests like the Los Angeles Laker Girls

You don’t have to wait for a fundraising event to be a philanthropist. If you’re a business owner, you can offer the products and services of your business to support, serve, and give back to people in your community on a daily basis. On a typical day, if a hundred clients come in, perhaps two of them can receive something extra or not pay at all.
Even if you’re not a business owner, you can use your place of employment as a vehicle to make a difference. If you’re a Future Professional or Learning Leader, you have the opportunity every single day to tell hundreds of people to have a good day and to truly mean it. Your smiles and kind words can heal someone in need. People in need are not just those who line up at a soup kitchen. There are people all around you who suffer in so many other ways. They could be people you work with every day, members of your family, neighbors, or people in your religious congregation.
Bestselling author Marianne Williamson said that every business is a front for a church, but I don’t think she was referring to a place of worship or a religion. Be a philanthropist every day by making your business a place where customers and employees feel accepted, loved, cared for, and safe.

Utah Future Professionals at Sundance Film Festival
Future Professionals from Paul Mitchell The School in Salt Lake City and Provo were on the scene to staff the Paul Mitchell VIP salon for all nine days of the 2007 Sundance Film Festival. The annual festival is held in Park City each January and is considered the premier U.S. showcase for American and international independent film.
Salt Lake City School Directors Shawn Trujillo and Angie Katsanevas hosted the Paul Mitchell Beauty Café and invited Future Professionals from both schools to do hairstyles for event-goers. Each day, teams of 9 to 13 Future Professionals served their celebrity “clientele,” including Dustin Diamond (Screech from Saved By the Bell), Gary Coleman, MTV’s Bam Magera, John Paul and Eloise DeJoria, and many others.


“The Future Professionals performed with the utmost skill and professionalism. They made us so proud! They represented themselves so technically and professionally, you would have thought they were veteran stylists working out of a salon in Beverly Hills.”

Shelby Lawson, Class of 2004
Paul Mitchell The School Costa Mesa
As a Future Professional at Paul Mitchell The School Costa Mesa, Shelby Lawson certainly made her mark. She graduated with honors in the Phase Two program in the top 5 percent of her class with a 4.0 GPA and earned honors awards in Paul Mitchell the color. She served as a member and representative of the Product Rep Team. She was chosen as a Beacon representative and she attended Paul Mitchell’s 2003 Signature Gathering, where her work was featured and she modeled on the runway. She also participated in school events to raise money for battered women by providing haircuts.
After graduating in 2004, Shelby became a Paul Mitchell National Color Educator and National Educator. “I love Paul Mitchell the color,” she says. “Color is my passion. It’s all I’ve ever focused on.” Shelby worked as hard after graduation as she did in school. At the 2004 ISSE show she was selected to do a model for the John Paul Mitchell Systems Show. At the 2004 Grammy Awards she represented Paul Mitchell as a stylist for the Teen People pre-show and MTV. At the 2006 SCBS show she worked with and assisted the Paul Mitchell Platform Team. She has trained and assisted throughout Paul Mitchell Academies and Partner Schools and she has received three awards for being an educator.
Shelby’s passion and focus have not gone unnoticed: In March 2007, John Paul Mitchell Systems hired Shelby as Regional Color Coordinator, making her the first Paul Mitchell School graduate to be hired for the full-time position. “I’m really excited to be leading a team and passing on the knowledge that’s been given to me,” Shelby says. “I wouldn’t be where I am today if it wasn’t for Paul Mitchell Schools and the people I’ve met along the way who believed in me. They inspired me and kept me going.”
Not surprisingly, Shelby’s advice for Future Professionals is straightforward and simple. “Work hard, pay attention, and one day it will pay off,” she says.
