Dear Future Professionals,
Do you sometimes find yourself struggling to balance everything it takes to go to school, hold down a job, and find time for all the people and activities in your life? Finding balance isn’t always easy, but it’s a nonnegotiable factor in creating a successful career and happy life.
Balance takes unique forms for every person, but I’m sure you’d agree that balance is necessary for maintaining your heart, mind, soul, health, sanity, and relationships.
When I’m off balance, I feel it in terms of my stress or energy levels. It usually means I’m not getting enough sleep, nutritious foods, or alone time. The following guidelines help me maintain balance and they can help you do the same.
- Drink lots of water to stay healthy and hydrated.
- Exercise and eat right.
- Make time for yourself, your family, and your friends.
- If you haven’t had a day off in a while, then take it. You’re not doing anyone a favor by being a workaholic and feeling unbalanced. To be your best for others, sometimes you need to be selfish and take time for yourself.
- When you have some time off, have a life. Garden, exercise, cook, sleep, play, read, and shop.
- Recharge. It’s okay to say no. You don’t need to accept every social engagement that comes your way. If you feel you need some personal time at the end of a long day, just kindly rescind plans and treat yourself to some well-deserved R & R.
- Discover what relaxes you. Is it reading motivational books? Doing crossword puzzles? Meditating? Make the time to do it.
Last but not least, if you find yourself going off kilter, just remember that the secret to getting back into balance is simply to create magic every day!

Paul Mitchell Schools in the Spotlight
Show up at any major sporting event and you’re bound to see Paul Mitchell banners on display. Now Paul Mitchell Schools are finding creative ways to have fun, stay fit, help others, and publicize their schools all at the same time.
Mark Palermo, owner of two Louisiana Paul Mitchell Partner Schools and a Paul Mitchell distributorship, has been skipper for Team Paul Mitchell Sailing for nearly a decade. His boat, the Sapphire, creates brand recognition while raising money for worthwhile causes. In a three-hour spur of the moment cut-a-thon at the International Rolex Regatta in St. Thomas, Team Paul Mitchell Sailing raised more than $500.

Frank Bennett, owner of The Academy NYC Paul Mitchell Partner School, has been racing Porsches for years. After crashing one at the track, he used its engine as the “heart and soul” of a new car dedicated to the Paul Mitchell culture. Covered with logos and special messages like “Be Nice (Or Else!),” the Academy NYC racer is like a school mascot. “It gets so much attention and it gets people talking,” Frank says.
School owner Michael Galvin brings new meaning to the question, “Whose bus are you on?” His “Believe” bus is equipped with a state-of-the-art mobile hair salon that makes a perfect backdrop for sports events, fundraisers, or visits to local homeless shelters. At the April Paul Mitchell School Owners Summit, Michael auctioned the bus to the highest bidder to use for five days and nights and raised $36,000 for the Andrew Gomez Dream Foundation.

You don’t have to own a bus, boat, or race car to join in the fun. Team Paul Mitchell Sports events are happening all over the country, and schools and salons are welcome to participate. These events bring thousands of potential customers to your local area, and Paul Mitchell wants to be where they play. Customers pumped on the Paul Mitchell brand from the playing field get pumped to experience Paul Mitchell hair care in your school or salon. To find out how you can get involved with Team Paul Mitchell Sports events in your local area, contact your salon consultant or regional director or visit www.paulmitchell.com for a current schedule. Future Professionals Honor Virginia Tech Victims
On April 16, the world was shocked by the senseless shooting of 32 innocent people at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, or Virginia Tech as we’ve come to know it.
At Rudy and Kelly Academy Paul Mitchell Partner School in Virginia, Future Professionals wore the Virginia Tech colors and observed a moment of silence. Future Professionals at the Ohio Academy Paul Mitchell Partner Schools raised $550 for the Hokie Spirit Memorial Fund, a special fund established by Virginia Tech to aid in the healing process. The fund will be used to cover expenses including but not limited to assistance to victims and their families, grief counseling, memorials, communication expenses, and comfort expenses.

Find Physical Balance
From Be Nice (Or Else!) by Winn Claybaugh
Cosmetology is such a physically demanding field. As a beauty professional, you spend long hours on your feet and need to maintain a positive, upbeat attitude. Pulling that off with style and grace requires physical balance.
Regular exercise and proper nutrition are the core ingredients in a solid routine for maintaining physical balance, but don’t just begin and end there. Perhaps you need to take care of yourself physically by seeing a doctor or dentist, or getting more sleep or rest. How about time for meditation, yoga, relaxation, or massage? Maybe it’s as simple as taking vitamin or mineral supplements.
Assess your physical balance and formulate a plan to improve yourself by asking these two questions:
Who are my physical mentors?
Who wants to play with me to keep balance physically?
When choosing a mentor, find someone in better shape than you. People who are already ahead of you make the best mentors. If they did it, then you can, too.
To stay motivated, find people who want to support and play with you. I go to the gym at least four or five days per week, but I don’t enjoy going. That doesn’t mean I have the option not to go, but I do have the option of making it fun. To me, “fun” means being around people so I get as many people to go to the gym with me as possible. We go together for balance, fun, conversation, camaraderie, escape, and more. I beat the “I’m too busy or tired” routine by making sure I have friends who keep me on track when I’m pooping out, and I do the same for them.
Remember, a commitment to physical balance can help you acquire balance in other areas of life. Your relationships, your performance at work, and your own self-esteem will dramatically improve.

Vanessa Cao, Class of 2006
The Cao Institute of Aesthetics A Paul Mitchell Partner School
Vanessa Cao literally grew up in the beauty industry. Her father is John Paul Mitchell Systems Master Associate Alee Cao, owner of the Cao Institute of Aesthetics Paul Mitchell Partner School in Alhambra, California. As a single parent, Alee often had no choice but to pop his little daughter into a baby backpack and carry her with him while he cut hair. By age eight, Vanessa was already helping in the salon and practicing on mannequins. She was often asked if she wanted to do hair like her dad but she always said no. “I wanted to be a nurse,” she says, “but my dad convinced me to start cosmetology school and see how I liked it.”
As it turned out, Vanessa loved it! She was active in the Product Rep and Design Teams and served as Student Council vice president. She participated in numerous photo shoots, fashion shows, and fundraising events including the Sue Wong PSA Vintage Fashion Show, and she had the chance to assist Artistic Directors for Paul Mitchell Professional Hair Color Scott Cole and Linda Yodice and their team at the ISSE hair show. “Now that I’ve gone to school,” Vanessa says, “I see that there’s so much more to it than coloring and cutting hair. Now I have a passion for it. If I hadn’t gone to school, I wouldn’t have known.”
Recently, Vanessa’s family and friends convinced her to take another big chance and enter the North American Hairstyling Awards (NAHA) competition. “I’ve never won anything in my life,” Vanessa says, “so this was a big step.” After learning she was named a finalist in the Student Hairstylist of the Year category, Vanessa says, “I’m really happy I listened to their advice.”

A recent graduate, Vanessa plans to continue her education and become a Learning Leader. She also plans to attend college, where she will major in business. She currently works full-time at a salon and hopes to eventually join her father in the family business.

“I’m so proud of Vanessa. She is a success story for Paul Mitchell Schools. The system has definitely shaped her into who she is today. I have seen her grow so much confidence in a year through school. As a parent, it is a great feeling that she decided to follow my path. Her creativity, humbleness, sweetness, and open mind will offer her endless opportunities.”

Theodore Leaf, Class of 2004
The Ohio Academy Paul Mitchell Partner School
After just nine months in Los Angeles, Theodore Leaf had already done hair for LA Fashion Week, the Kush Cush runway show, the Broadway tour of Annie, a Disney Channel commercial, and a host of celebrity clients. One year later, this up-and-coming stylist is running his own Los Angeles salon, creating hairstyles for private clients attending the Academy Awards, and appearing on Bravo TV’s new reality show, Shear Genius, where he won the first challenge and made it through the first three weeks.
“When I worked on the show, I was literally at a whole other level than I’ve ever seen because I was around people like Frederick Fekkai, Sally Hershberger, and Allure magazine,” Theodore says. “To know that Paul Mitchell Schools set me up to win in that way is a huge testament to what you pay for when you go to a school like that. When I moved to Los Angeles, I drove here in a Saturn. I have a BMW now, my own apartment, and a great business. At the end of the day, if that’s what it gets you, you can’t put a price on that.”

Theodore has five tips for staying in balance while chasing your dreams.
1. Hang out with successful businesspeople.
2. Take care of yourself; your body makes you money.
3. Pay attention to the details. Every single thing matters.
4. Surround yourself with people who want you to succeed.
5. Read Connecting to My Future. “I go back to it all the time,” Theodore says. “I literally carry it around in my bag. If I ever have a question there’s always something in there that will give me an answer. A lot of students don’t embrace that book enough but I can’t say enough about it. The information is so brilliant.”
If you have any questions for Theodore, feel free to e-mail him at his Web site (www.theodoreleaf.com). “People always wrote me back when I was a student so I’m really committed to doing that,” he says.

“I am sitting here like a proud mama. Our very own Theodore (a former Future Professional in our first class) is on the new TV show Shear Genius on Bravo. Tonight was the first show and he won the challenge of the night. We are so excited! He was up against some pretty seasoned people and he did some amazing work.”
NeCole Cumberlander
Co-owner of the Ohio Academy Paul Mitchell Partner School

“Theodore was a total gem to watch on the show and our BTC team was really disappointed to see him goespecially with those great curly locks and even more adorable personality. We are looking for big things from Theodore in this biz. The fact that he made it to the Top 12 on Shear Genius is a testament to the Paul Mitchell curriculum and personality. Rock on, Theodore!”
