Dear Future Professionals,
At my 25-year high school reunion, I was surprised at how old and tired many of my classmates looked. I kept going to the rest room to check the mirror because I certainly didn’t look or feel as old as they did. I realized that it’s because I’ve spent the last 25 years hanging out with beauty school students who’ve kept me young, alive, passionate, and energized.
Although we have Future Professionals of every age, the average person entering our schools was born after 1981. This Millennial generation accounts for a third of the U.S. population, making them the largest generation ever. They spend $170 billion a year, and they don’t even have mortgages yet. And even though many of them aren’t old enough to vote, they’re the most studied generation in U.S. history.
At Paul Mitchell Schools, we’re doing everything we can to cater to this generation, not only because they’re our biggest customer but also because they bring great ideas to the table. Some people think they’re lazy and irresponsible, but we know they’re polite, kind, aware, and informed. They may be high maintenance but they will also be the highest performing generation. Besides, the ways in which they’re high maintenance are actually good because the things they demand from their workplacesstrong leadership, mentoring, relationships, and funare things we all want, no matter how old we are.
The Millennials are not going to change their demands, and why should they? To connect with them, today’s businesses have to change the ways they attract and retain employees. In this issue, you’ll meet Lisa Orrell, author of Millennials Incorporated. I urge you to listen to her MASTERS interview and find out how you can connect with this incredible generation, including the 10,000 Millennials who are graduating from Paul Mitchell Schools every year.

SCHOOLS IN THE NEWS

Paul Mitchell Schools
Rock the Vote!
Future Professionals from Paul Mitchell The School in Orlando and Utah, and from the Lab A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Ewing, New Jersey, held Rock the Vote events to encourage voter registration.
In Orlando, members of a nonprofit organization visited the school to register 58 Future Professionals. “The buzz after they left was so incredible,” said Admissions Leader Sara Seber. “This raised awareness and struck up many conversations about the issues on the table right now. For some, it was their very first time to register; others simply needed to update their addresses. Whatever the case, it opened all of their minds and gave them what they needed to be proactive: a voice.”
At the Lab, the voter registration drive was part of a Sprit Day event led by Student Council. Future Professionals wore red, white, and blue, and speakers shared stories about the right to vote. Two laptops were available to register voters at www.rockthevote.com. “Prior to the event we got stickers, buttons, and posters from the Rock the Vote Web site,” said School Owner Sasha Rash. “Later in the week we had a companywide soiree (school and salons) and repeated the whole process for salon employees and guests.”
|
In Provo, Future Professionals joined forces with Brigham Young University’s weeklong “Get Out the Vote” campaign. The university provided free sports drinks and popcorn, and 47 Future Professionals passed out thousands of flyers and gave 357 haircuts in three hours. The story made the front page of the BYU Daily Universe.

Registration deadlines for the November election have already passed in some states but not all. Visit www.rockthevote.com and register today. If you’ve missed your state’s deadline, register anyway to make sure your vote counts in future elections!

Four New Schools Celebrate Grand Openings
August 2008 saw grand opening celebrations at four new Paul Mitchell Schools. As always, Paul Mitchell CEO John Paul DeJoria and Paul Mitchell Schools Dean and Cofounder Winn Claybaugh took to the air to attend all four events. Their first stop was Paul Mitchell The School Chicago on August 11. The next day was a double header featuring Paul Mitchell The School Indianapolis and Paul Mitchell The School Overland Park. The final stop was Imagine A Paul Mitchell Partner School in Little Rock, Arkansas.

In Indianapolis, where classes had already started, Owners Randy and Sharida Burkholder welcomed friends, family members, salon associates, and other Paul Mitchell school owners from all parts of the United States. Jason Liechty from the Chamber of Commerce welcomed the school to Indianapolis at the ribbon cutting ceremony.
At Paul Mitchell The School Overland Park, School Owner Ted Wise and School Director Michele Harrington welcomed local salon owners, stylists, and business owners along with Paul Mitchell educators, Chamber of Commerce members, friends, and family members.
Imagine A Paul Mitchell Partner School was swirling with school owners, staff members, Future Professionals, community leaders, and salon professionals. Their event kicked off with a red carpet welcome for John Paul and Winn, followed by a ribbon cutting ceremony including Chamber of Commerce leaders and Mayor Patrick Henry Hays.
Approximately 1,000 guests joined owners Steve and Terri Cowan, Jim and Tina Salerno, and Jeff and Ann Petro at Paul Mitchell The School Chicago. Special guests included University of Illinois at Chicago Vice Chancellor Michael Landek, several other university dignitaries, and surprise guests Robert Cromeans and Angus Mitchell. School owners, staff members, and Future Professionals from many other Paul Mitchell Schools also attended. The formal ribbon cutting ceremony was followed by a special VIP party that included photo shows from that night as well as various photos from the building process.

Cosmetology Career Center Staff Recognizes Outstanding Attendance

To Create Magic with Future Professionals who had 90% or higher attendance in June, staff members from the Cosmetology Career Center A Paul Mitchell Partner School recognized them by washing their cars.
“We braved the 100-plus-degree heat of Texas in July to honor those Future Professionals who continued to come to school during a time of year that some typically take off for vacation or just to get a break,” said Sales Leader Pam McRoberts. “We worked in shifts and really had a great time honoring our amazing Future Professionals.”

The Temple Welcomes Special Guests

In August, the Temple A Paul Mitchell Partner School opened their doors to Walter Reed Army Medical Center for a day of pampering and relaxation. Future Professionals Layla Darzi, Ashlee Schriver, Nikki Jankowski, Devan Moyer, and Joyce Bowie provided color, haircuts, manicures, and scalp treatments to five patients and one woman whose husband has been in the hospital for much of the past year. Since few nonmedical personnel are permitted onsite, the hospital provided transportation to the school.

Joyce Bowie’s guest, Helen, served in Iraq for several years before her injuries brought her to the hospital, and she will receive an honorable medical discharge from the military when she leaves. “I was honored to show her my appreciation for her work in serving our country and protecting my own family,” Joyce said.
Devan Moyer’s guest, Mary, has spent most of the year by her husband’s bedside as he endured several surgeries for his injuries. With children at home, it’s been almost a year since Mary has done anything for herself. “She left with a great new haircut, freshly manicured nails, and beautiful highlights,” Devan said. “It really gave me a chance to shine and give meaning to being a day maker.”
“All of the guests left with goodie baskets filled with Paul Mitchell shampoos, conditioners, and styling products,” said School Director/Sales Leader Sharon Riser. “We can’t wait to work with Walter Reed Army Medical Center again.”
The Temple’s Future Professionals also joined the City of Frederick Housing Authority for their annual "Giving Kids a Bright Start” back-to-school event. The Future Professionals gave over 30 free haircuts. Each child also received Paul Mitchell shampoo and conditioner samples and a VIP card to visit the Temple during the holidays.

Cincinnati Academy Raises Money for Food 4 Africa
Future Professionals from Cincinnati Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School raised $1,078 for Food 4 Africa by cutting hair at the AVP Crocs Cup Shootout, a pro beach volleyball tournament in Mason, Ohio.
“By volunteering to do haircuts for a minimum $10 donation, our Future Professionals will make a difference in the lives of many children,” said Admissions Assistant Gina Burris. “They had a blast while they were there and even got to meet some of the athletes. One Future Professional gave Team USA player Jake Gibb his first haircut after returning from the Beijing Olympics. Needless to say, she was nervous and thrilled! I am so proud to be able to spend every day with such an amazing team.”
Food 4 Africa is committed to supplying at least one vitamin- and mineral-enriched meal each day to children of South Africa, where the HIV/AIDS epidemic has left countless numbers of orphaned children, and more than a million preschool children do not receive sufficient food. To date, Paul Mitchell Schools have donated over $143,000 to Food 4 Africa.

Fundraiser Honors Graduate
Meghan Casella, a March 2008 graduate of Michael’s School of Hair Design and Esthetics A Paul Mitchell Partner School, passed away last May in an automobile accident resulting from drinking and driving. A sweet, quiet, 20-year-old, Meghan had struggled to manage work and school. She was very proud when she graduated and was excited to pursue her new career. After learning about her death, the staff and Future Professionals wanted to do something to honor her and create magic out of a tragedy, so they held a car wash and raised $304 for Mother’s Against Drunk Driving.
After learning about the event, Meghan’s grandparents and parents contacted the school and thanked them for keeping her memory alive. They are creating a scholarship, in Meghan’s name, for applicants to the school. They expressed their appreciation that Meghan was cared for by so many and enjoyed her school as much as she did.

Be a Visionary
By Winn Claybaugh
The Millennial generation doesn’t feel discriminated against because of race or gender, but they often feel discriminated against because of age. Their attitude is, “I may be in my 20s, but if I’m as qualified as a 40-year-old then I should get the same opportunities.” I agree! I don’t care if somebody else has been standing in line longer. If the younger candidate is more qualified, has a better attitude and energy, and is a visionary, that person should get the job.
If you’re a Millennial and you want to make sure your age doesn’t stand in your way, start by becoming a visionary. Visionaries are people who’ve caught the vision of the company. They do whatever it takes to make sure the company is profitable, the team is happy and healthy, and their participation is for the good of everyone. Any potential employer will tell you they’d rather hire someone with a good attitude than someone with brilliant skill and a bad attitude. Can you become a brilliant hairstylist, skin care therapist, or nail care technician overnight? No, but you can become an amazing visionary with an incredible attitude overnight. Prior to today, you may have been the worst resister your school has ever seen, but you can turn that around immediately. Here’s how visionary behavior looks:
- Be the first to arrive and the last to leave.
- Say yes to everything: Design Team, Take Home Team, Student Council, Go Green Team, Cutting Honors, Color Honors, entering Beacon and NAHA, volunteering your time to make a difference, and participating in fundraising activities and anything else available at your school.
- Never have the attitude of “That’s not my job.”
- Have the attitude of “What’s in it for us today?”
- Be inclusive. You don’t get to vote anybody off your island. You don’t get to “elimidate” anybody. Everybody is your friend.
Dance Party Fridays
Millennials love to have fun at work, and here’s an idea that everyone will love! Every week, Paul Mitchell The School San Diego holds Dance Party Fridays. At 3 p.m., School Co-director Joyce Douglas invites everyone in the building onto the clinic floor. Some days the announcement even takes the form of a rap. “We dance to two songs,” Joyce says. “The first song is usually something disco-ish, and the second track is always ‘The Cupid Shuffle.’ We then treat everyone who participatesguests and allto something like a popsicle, chocolate, or cold drink, and then it’s back to business.”
Some of their favorite songs include “Disco Inferno,” “Thriller,” “Groove Is in the Heart,” “The Twist,” “We Are Family,” and “It’s Raining Men.”

Rob Barber and Jon Whitman, Class of 2008
Vision Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School
Life has been a convoluted journey for Rob Barber and Jon Whitman. At age 18, when his college discovered that he was gay, Jon says, he was ejected from the school and subsequently abandoned by his family. By age 25, he had attended four colleges, studied six majors, and walked away without a diploma in hand, feeling more lost than ever. Rob’s story comes from the opposite end of the spectrum. Always surrounded by love and support, he dabbled in college but quickly lost interest. A chance meeting near the end of 2002 brought the two together, and six months later, they moved in together.
A couple years later, feeling bored, stagnant, and frustrated with their lives, they accepted Rob’s parents’ offer to live with them and go back to school. There, Jon learned the values of a truly loving family and spearheaded their careers when he enrolled in the Vision Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School. When Rob tagged along for his orientation, he quickly realized he wanted to be there, too.
While in school, Rob and Jon entered Beacon and won their way to the TSA Symposium. As members of the Product Rep Team, they organized and led three product launches, one artistic collection DVD launch, and three color series launches in their school. They joined forces with the Design Team to style hair for two area prom fashion shows, and they’ve attended numerous hair shows where they’ve had the opportunity to meet educators like Robert Cromeans, Stephanie Kocielski, and Vivienne Mackinder. Outside of school, they take classes on their own time while working at full-time jobs.
After graduation, Rob and Jon hope to find work in salons that embrace the Paul Mitchell culture. They hope to work as Paul Mitchell associates or educators and to one day open their own school. “Collectively, we want to reach high within this industry,” they say.

Jordan Reusche, Class of 2008
Cincinnati Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School
Jordan Reusche began her journey at the Cincinnati Academy in 2007, when she moved to Cincinnati from Lexington, Kentucky, just to attend a Paul Mitchell School. Although she was only 17 years old, Jordan’s passion for the industry was easy to see. She gave 100% effort and was a member of every student-run program as well as Phase Two.
Not long into her program, Jordan shared her dream of someday working at A Robert Cromeans Salon. She and two other Future Professionals saved their money so they could attend an interview session in Las Vegas last winter and returned to school beaming with pride: all three had received invitations for a second interview. “It is an in-depth process to get a job at A Robert Cromeans Salon,” said Cofounder Margaret Cromeans. “You do need to sometimes fly across country just to sit through a hiring event and maybe again for a ‘hangout’ day.”
For Jordan, being asked to come back for a second interview was like getting a golden ticket to tour Willie Wonka’s chocolate factory. As soon as she passed her Ohio State Board cosmetology exam, she headed to Las Vegas. From the moment she arrived she started to visit Robert’s salon, making herself available and present. She was invited to a hangout day and relished every minute of it. At hangout days, the Robert Cromeans team looks for people who jump in and start taking actioneven helping to clean and sweep, if neededrather than just sitting there waiting to be asked. Jordan’s enthusiasm and persistence paid off: her first day as an employee at A Robert Cromeans Salon was Sunday, August 17.

“Jordan was a visionary her entire time here. She is proof that if you live our culture and follow our systems, your dreams can become your reality. She found her destiny and I have no doubt she will shine just as brightly at A Robert Cromeans Salon as she did here at the Cincinnati Academy.”
Linda August, owner of Cincinnati Academy A Paul Mitchell Partner School |

Tips from the Green Team Newsletter

It started with John Paul Mitchell Systems. It spread to Paul Mitchell Schools’ corporate offices. Now Green Teams are sprouting up in Paul Mitchell Schools all over the country. These bold, unstoppable change makers are turning their schools, communities, and the world into a cleaner, better place by implementing recycling programs on their campuses. Here’s how they’re doing it (and you can do it, too)!
|
Steps to Recycling in Your School, Salon, or Spa
1. Find the best areas in your business for recycling bins. Different areas will require different types of bins.
2. Types of bins you may need:
Hair bins: To recycle the hair that gets cut throughout the day, place recycling bins on your clinic floor and send the hair to an organization that recycles it (such as Matters of Trust).
- Plastic bins: Place a bin in your dispensary or Color Bar for plastic bottles. (Rinse all bottles before recycling.)
- Glass bins
- Garbage bins
- Paper bins: Which parts of your business use paper? (Example: offices.) Find an area in those rooms and place reusable and recyclable paper bins there.
3. Find local recycling centers that will refund for recyclables. If your business is a school, the money should be put back into student-run programs and school activities.
4. Create a 30-day action plan/calendar with specific assignments and deadlines for implementing recycling in your organization.
