Paul Mitchell The School In Costa Mesa
Team

Meet some of the Learning Leaders and team members who make Paul Mitchell The School Costa Mesa so special.

Steve Cowan

Co-Owner

Innovation, education, and commitment. These are often the words used by those in the hair care industry to describe Steve Cowan. His company, Professional Salon Concepts, was the first beauty industry distributor to earn a place in Inc. Magazine among the top 500 privately owned companies in America—and they earned this honor not just once, but twice. PSC was also named Modern Salon’s “Distributor of the Year” and was presented the Diamond Award for Excellence in Customer Service by American Salon Magazine.

As a proud distributor, Steve applied his background and experiences in business and training to build PSC into the industry leader that it is today. Steve founded PSC in 1983 with the deep commitment to his clients and a new philosophy that would become an industry model. This was, and still is, PSC’s mission to grow the industry one hairdresser at a time, through a balance of technical skills, training, and business savvy. His goal is to make the salon business profitable and professional, an industry and career that people are drawn to and love. Utilizing his business expertise and unparalleled industry-specific dialogue, he can build business by changing just a few of the words and phrases used behind the chair.

Dedicated to helping salon owners see their business through their customers' eyes, Steve is committed to upgrading the image of the hair care industry. He firmly believes quality service is key. With this insight and dedication, Steve continues to lead the pack in changing the industry through the belief that in this industry, as in all professions, “Today’s Performance is Tomorrow’s Traffic!”

With Steve’s passion for the beauty industry, he wanted to give more to the hairdressers and help mold the industry’s new and growing talent. In 2007, Steve and Terri Cowan started their journey into the world of the Paul Mitchell Schools. Today they are co-owners along with Jim and Tina Salerno to Paul Mitchell Schools in Escanaba, MI, Chicago, IL, and Lombard, IL.

Terri Cowan

Co-Owner

Terri alongside her husband, Steve Cowan, own Professional Salon Concepts, the first beauty industry distributor to earn a place in Inc. Magazine among the top 500 privately owned companies in America—and they earned this honor not just once, but twice. PSC was also named Modern Salon’s “Distributor of the Year” and was presented the Diamond Award for Excellence in Customer Service by American Salon Magazine.

As proud distributors, Terri and Steve have applied their background and experiences in business and training to build PSC into the industry leader that it is today. Terri serves as one of the salon industry’s leading and most respected speakers and trainers. Her direct common sense approach to measuring and quantifying extraordinary customer service, combined with her undeniable sense of humor, is what her audiences enjoy the most.

Today, Terri and Steve Cowan act as consultants to many of the salons they serve. They are consultants for A Robert Cromeans Salons and are combining efforts with John Paul Mitchell Systems to spread their culture. In 2007, they started their journey into the world of the Paul Mitchell Schools. Today they are co-owners to the Paul Mitchell Schools in Escanaba, MI, Chicago, IL, and Lombard, IL. And their mission continues—“To Grow the Beauty Industry, One Hairdresser at a time.”

Jim Salerno

Co-Owner

Jim Salerno is president of James Anthony Salon, and co-founder/co-owner of Paul Mitchell The School Chicago, PMTS-Lombard, and PMTS-Escanaba, MI. He is a second generation stylist who has been around the beauty industry since his youth. He enrolled in cosmetology school in 1980, with the hope to follow in his father's footsteps, and did so. His father operates Anthony Salerno Hair in Oak Park, where Jim joined him for ten years.

Jim seized an opportunity to break out on his own. He has owned and operated James Anthony Salon since 1991. Jim's years at his father's salon were great years, and provided the impetus in forming what has become the number one Paul Mitchell Salon in Illinois and a place among Salon Today's Top 20 Salons in the country. Jim and his wife, Tina, are also partners with Steve and Terri Cowan, John Paul DeJoria, and Winn Claybaugh, co-owning Paul Mitchell The Schools Chicago, Escanaba, and Lombard.

The salon is mainly composed of Paul Mitchell School graduates, and carries on the Paul Mitchell culture. "Our team is on the same page; education is a non-negotiable for us. Our team has been trained by the best in the world. Paul Mitchell as a company provides the platform to allow a career path and growth for our hairstylists," says Jim. "We have the Paul Mitchell culture in the schools, and we carry it through in the salon. Our team is a dedicated, forward-focused, positive, talented group of individuals that, together, create this synergy to provide the greatest experience when our guests are with us." At James Anthony Salon, people come first, from the team to their guests; exceeding expectations is always the goal.

Tina Salerno

Co-Owner

Tina is a master stylist and owner of James Anthony Salon. Tina has passion and love for the beauty industry. Through her dedication and extensive education, including a cosmetology teacher's license, she fosters the future of the industry by guiding and coaching the Future Professionals.

Along with her husband and business partner, Jim Salerno, Tina partners with John Paul DeJoria, CEO of Paul Mitchell, Winn Claybaugh, motivational speaker and Dean of the Paul Mitchell Schools, and Steve and Terri Cowan, coaches in the beauty industry, to co-own Paul Mitchell The School Chicago, Lombard, and Escanaba, Michigan.

Tina believes that when you love what you do, love who you do it with, and love who you do it for, then success follows. "Education and giving back are what allows you to move forward, and in return I grow in my talents, and in life!" Tina is recognized in the industry as a leader who not only applies her positive attitude, but employs the imagination and creativity that keeps us on the cutting edge. She was highlighted in Chicago Magazine as one of the top 49 stylists in Chicago as a long hair specialist. "I absolutely love the industry I have chosen that has made my dreams a reality. I love my team, our beautiful salon space, and our schools."

I have been a licensed cosmetology teacher since 2010. I've played in most areas of education here at the school, as well as on the compliance side.

Experience in the beauty industry…

I started my journey in 2006.  From there, I worked behind the chair for some time before realizing my passion was within the schools.

My mentor, or the person who has most inspired me is…

There are many people who have inspired me throughout my career, each of them have helped me be the best I could be. A few of my biggest mentors have been my husband; Anthony, my father; George Jensen, Steve Cowan, Luke Jacobellis, and Kathy Buckley.

My favorite thing about working at Paul Mitchell The School Chicago is…

Being able to feel a part of a family network regardless of how long you have worked for the school.

To me, living beautifully means…

“Loving what you do, who you do it with, and who you do it for,” not just in work, but in life.

My favorite thing about working at Paul Mitchell The School Chicago is…

The inspiration and energy that is created between the school and Future Professionals. Together, we all make a difference!

To me, living beautifully means…

Living each day to the fullest. It’s important to be passionate about what you choose to do on a daily basis and to treat people with courtesy and respect. For me, the best thing is to go to bed at night knowing “today I changed someone’s life path and helped them to be one step closer to their dreams.”

My co-workers. We have become a little family. No matter what happens in life, I know I have these amazing people on my side, good times and bad.

I got my start in education at Paul Mitchell The School Las Vegas in 2011 and joined the Lombard Team in 2013, where I played in Core, theory, and on the clinic floor as a Learning Leader and clinic floor leader. Experience in the beauty industry…

I feel very fortunate to have had the opportunity to be a part of the team at Walk In Salon by Robert Cromeans in Las Vegas, NV.
