MORGAN’S STORY

WHAT ARE YOUR GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS?
I’m still pretty fresh in this amazing industry. There are many little accomplishments I have made along the way from my educational accomplishments with making it to caper and winning an Honorable Mention in Beacon, and winning a spot to work with Tearsheet for a photo shoot in Vegas. Yet the biggest accomplishment to date that tops it all was truly making the decision to join this industry in the first place. We have the opportunity to touch peoples lifes on a daily basis while creating magic with their hair all in one sitting. Nothing can top that. We get to do something externally (hair) that touches someone internally (heart) and to me that’s the greatest accomplishment of them all.

WHAT DID YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR PAUL MITCHELL SCHOOL EXPERIENCE?
I loved so many things about Paul Mitchell. It gave me the best start to my career that I could have ever asked for. The early exposure to everything this industry has to offer us was amazing beyond measure. The education was truly top notch. You cannot beat Paul Mitchell’s education. From the Learning Leaders, motivational speakers, and Caper. My education is something no one can take away from me and I’m blessed to say I’m a Paul Mitchell alumni. Take advantage of EVERY opportunity they give you!

MY ADVICE FOR FURTURE PROFESSIONALS IS…
Never give up on a dream because of the time it's going to take to achieve it. The time will pass either way. Many times we always want instant gratification but it takes 10,000 times doing the same thing to become an expert. Never give up. Love the person you are and never compare yourself to others you were made to be the expect person you are for a reason. That goes for you as an artist also. We each have our unique talents you are an artist BE YOU! And NEVER stop learning.

EMILY’S STORY

WHAT DO YOU DO?
I am a Color Specialist at Spoke & Weal in San Francisco. I have worked with Jon Reyman (our salon owner) and have taken LA Runway styling to prepare for working New York Fashion Week in the fall. I am moving to NYC in the summer to work for our Soho location solely to work more fashion weeks. Currently I do everything, I answer phones, fold towels, apply color and have education classes every wednesday. I manage clients and the work schedule. We don’t have any managers at Spoke & Weal so we all take on all jobs. I got to the position by taking a shot and moving from Colorado to California and pursuing my dreams of getting closer to the editorial business and fashion industry. Our owner Jon Reyman, has an editorial business and is hired every year for NYFW and LFW. This makes it possible for me to finally reach my goals. We are a team of problem solvers, and we never say no to a guest. I love everything about S&W I couldn’t have asked for a better work place. I work next to the most phenomenal hair colorists and hair stylists in the United States and I am inspired everyday.

WHAT IS THE BEST ADVICE YOU'VE EVER RECEIVED?
The best advice I ever received is that failure is the key to success. If you don’t take risks you’ll never know! I moved to Colorado right after beauty school and learned so much but felt like something was missing, then moving to San Francisco, I finally sky rocketed with my career and where I wanted to be. If I didn’t take the risk to move to SF, I wouldn’t be here right now. If I didn’t fail a little in Colorado, I would never feel so successful.

WHAT DID YOU LOVE MOST ABOUT YOUR PAUL MITCHELL SCHOOL EXPERIENCE?
My Paul Mitchell education was so fun. I was in every club, I did all the extra curricular activities at the school. I did cutting honors and started color honors. Sadly I never finished them but I learned SO much from them. I entered Beacon when I was in Core and received an Honorable Mention and got to go to Vegas and meet the most amazing influencers in the industry. I was a Phase Two student. I actually ended up teaching cosmetology at PMTS in Colorado Springs before my move. Still loved the culture just as much as I did when I was in school! Beauty school was hard, probably one of the hardest times in my life but definitely the best, I grew so much as a human.

WHAT ADVICE CAN YOU GIVE FUTURE PROFESSIONALS?
Advice that I have for other FPs... You will go through many trails and tribulations when first starting your career. You will question everything, your formulas, your friends, your own self. NEVER give up and keep the dreams you have help close to you. Set short term goals and long terms goals, anything is possible. Do not give up.

ERICA’S STORY

WHAT DO YOU DO?
I am a Stylist at Elayne James Salon. I love my job and I couldn't see myself at any other salon. We really focus on continuting education and my boss, Jess, really invests in and encourages her employees. The salon operates on a level system in which you reach higher levels based on performance as opposed to time, so the potential for growth is incredible. I finished the associate program in less than a year, and I am projecting to jump two levels by the beginning of next year.

YOUR FAVORITE THING ABOUT PAUL MITCHELL THE SCHOOL DELAWARE IS…
Personally, I loved my experience at Paul Mitchell, and your experience is totally what you make it. You're learning the basics in a limitless field. You won't be an expert when you graduate, but you will have the foundations and fundamentals to thrive if you take those basics as a platform to grow.

WHAT IS YOUR ADVICE FOR FUTURE PROFESSIONALS?
Take your education and career into your own hands. If you want to be better at something then take the initiative. The resources are there if you want them. The opportunities are limitless but they won't just be handed to you. I realized this early on in my journey and I had an amazing experience, and now I'm thriving in my salon.

I recommend those on the team that show mastery of any given skill set or need more improvement. As Support Staff Captain, I oversee a team of 6. I create a workflow schedule that ensures the salon will have the appropriate manpower properly service incoming client flow and to assist all stylists. I devise monthly work schedules for the Support Staff Team. I approve or disapprove off time. I recruit potential new hires and conduct interviews.
