TELL US ABOUT YOUR STORY

When I was in school I assisted in a high-volume salon & spa. It allowed me to see what a fast-paced salon environment would be like. Upon graduating from Bella Capelli Academy, I realized I wanted to work in a smaller salon and work on building my clientele.  I learned so much from having the opportunity to work in different types of salons and that helped me find my home and success at Salon Bella Mia.

TELL US ABOUT YOUR PAUL MITCHELL SCHOOLS EDUCATION

Going to Bella Capelli Academy set me up for success.  I learned the skills I needed to be successful in different salon environments.  I really enjoyed being a core mentor when I was in Creative. I was able to own the information I learned when I was in Core and assist in teaching the current Core class.  The learning leaders at Bella Capelli Academy were very helpful and were always there to encourage me and set me up for success in the professional beauty industry.

MY ADVICE TO FUTURE PROFESSIONALS IS...

Take in everything you have the opportunity to.

What Do You Do?

I started working at Contempo Artistries Salon while I was still in school at Bella Capelli Academy because I had the opportunity to meet the salon owner, Kristen, while she was guest speaking. She told me to stop in, so about a week later I did and was hired on the spot. I began as an assistant and started stylist training before my graduation. I knew I wanted to continue my education further so the Admissions Leader at Bella Capelli Academy and Kristen wrote me letters of recommendation to add into my portfolio to be an educator for PRAVANA. I traveled to California three times last year and am officially certified. Since then, I’ve taught a handful of class. I continue to work at the salon full time as well as educate on Mondays and Tuesdays.

What Do You Do?

Being a client at Contempo Artistries was actually part of the reason I pursued a career in cosmetology. At the time, I was working at a tanning salon when my stylist told me they were looking for an assistant because she knew I was contemplating doing hair. I applied and got the position, which then made me realize this was definitely the industry for me. I enrolled at Bella Capelli Academy while still working part-time at Contempo Artistries. This allowed for me to complete the assistant program so once I gradauted from Bella Capelli Academy, I was able to switch to full-time stylist.

What Do You Do?

After I graduated from Bella Capelli Academy, I started assisting in a privately owned salon. It just wasn't the career path for me. I wanted to further my education in skin care, so I looked into getting my esthetician license. My cosmetology license allowed me to be able to do skin care, but I wanted to learn more in depth about the machines and be authorized to use them. About after a month or so of working strictly with skin at Renew Skin Care & Laster Center, I really missed doing hair so I took a position at JCP Salon a few nights a week as well.

Tell Us About Your Paul Mitchell Schools Education:

I was given so many opportunites at Bella Capelli Academy to learn beyond the basic state-board exam education. Even though I really wasn't crazy about hair extensions, I took advantage of the Academy-Pro class that was offered to get my certification. I feel like when I talk to those who went elsewhere for their cosmetology education, they weren't given the same type of opportunites as we are at Bella Capelli Academy. I also love the positivity. It's a very open and welcoming environment, and also having the Paul Mitchell name behind my education makes me feel like I have an advantage to showcase my professionalism.

Advice to Future Professionals...

Do everything that is thrown at you, and practice as much as you can! Find time to be creative, and don't stress so much about your worksheets.

What Do You Do?

I am a full-time stylist, that we call 'designers' here at Synergy Salon & Day Spa. I started here as an assistant right after graduating Bella Capelli Academy and worked my way up. It's definitely a different transition going from Future Professional to part-time assistant, to a full-time, commission only salon professional, but I always make sure I keep myself up-to-date with the current trends and always learning.

Tell Us About Your Paul Mitchell Schools Education:

I felt very prepared with my cutting skills when I graduated school, and as I continue to cut, I have grown much more comfortable and confident. The education at Bella Capelli Academy was always up-to-date with the current hair trends when I was in school. The Learning Leaders knew what was popular or upcoming in the industry, and we were able to practice the latest haircut or color technique on real guests that they otherwise would have went to a trendy, upscale salon to get. The Clinic Classroom also helped me with practicing proper guest consultations. I still recite the 4-step program we did in school while I have someone in my chair now!

Advice to Future Professionals...

Take every opportunity you can. Pay attention to detail. Really focus on what the guest wants and go through those steps. Trust me, they still come in handy even after you graduate.

What Do You Do?

I met Salon Boutique at the Bi-Annual Salon Fair Bella Capelli Academy hosts for the Future Professionals, and they really peaked my interest. I thought I cliqued well with the two women who were at the fair, and I could tell by their look, it would be a good fit for me. I interviewed a few months before my graduation, and was offered the position as associate to the owner, Lisa. Two days after my gradaution from Bella Capelli Academy, I started at my new position. After about year of hard work, I leveled up to a Level 1 Stylist position, and I couldn't be happier!

Tell Us About Your Paul Mitchell Schools Education:

The business aspects and the importance they place on guest consultations were two of the biggest things I took away from school besides technical skills, obviously. I also really loved the comradery of the Paul Mitchell Schools culture. I liked how accepting they are of everyone, and emphasizing that one size truly fits all.

Advice to Future Professionals...

Remember why you wanted to go into the industry in the first place. Find your passion and work towards it every day.

Tell Us About Your Career Path:

I heard of Salon Boutique through the Admissions & Placement Team at Bella Capelli Academy. They were looking to bring on a new associate stylist, and the team thought this would be a good fit for me and my personality so I contacted them. I was brought in for an interview and hired the next day. It's my first salon job right out of school, and I really like it. I am the owner, Lisa's, associate so I work directly with her and her clients. I also do a ton of color and baylayage applications on my own when I take clients.

How Did Bella Capelli Academy Help You with the Transition from School to Work??

Besides technical skills, Bella Capelli Academy helped me a lot with the business side of the industry, especially with interview preparation. The culture and education made me feel more confident with myself and my skills.  Having to take real guests taught me how to keep track of my numbers with how many guests I take a day/week/month, how to keep my book organized and balanced, and how to keep track of my income including commission and tips

Advice to Future Professionals...

Practice as much as you can, and take as many guests as possible so you get that experience while you are in school under supervision and guidance of your Learning Leaders. You will feel more confident to take a job when you graduate.

Tell Us About Your Career Path:

I actually knew Amanda, the owner of Salon Boutique before I started my career here; she was my stylist. I loved the atmosphere of the salon so whenever I chose to enter this industry as a Future Professional at Bella Capelli Academy, I spoke to her about a potential position after graduation. I wouldn't exactly call it an "interview," but I did have to perform a blow-dry for her and the other owner, Lisa. I started working here a month before I graduated from Bella Capelli Academy as an associate, and am currently working towards my Level 1 Stylist position.

Tell Us About Your Paul Mitchell Schools Education:

All in all, I really liked the 'be nice or else,' one size fits all culture Paul Mitchell Schools put in effect right from the day you tour. Bella Capelli Academy taught me how to be more acceptiong of people and hearing their stories. Final Phase was awesome as I was getting ready to graduate. It helped me with things I really didn't think about when transitioning from school to the working world as well as going over state laws. Final Phase also made me more aware of how things are in a salon and how the industry works from a legal standpoint, which I found pretty awesome.

Advice to Future Professionals...

Really treat school like it's your job and your career. Bella Capelli Academy definitely sets your up to be more prepared to transition into the working world. Being an adult, you can't just call off because you don't feel like going in that day. Get yourself to school. Practice as much as possible, and push yourself out of your comfort zone.

Tell Us About Your Career Path:

While I was in school I was able to work in a job that perfectly complemented my school schedule. I heard about the open position at Izzazu Salon, Spa & Serata through one of my Learning Leaders as my graduation date was approaching. My interview process went well because they offered me a position assisting before I graduated. I’ve always been interested in doing more special events and weddings so the Serata part of Izzazu Salon, Spa & Serata is one of my favorite parts. I look forward to eventually having my own chair, and I am so happy with the assisting program they have in place. I feel like it’s just building my confidence even more for when I am able to take on my own chair.

How Did Bella Capelli Academy Education Benefit You in Your Career?

Definitely dealing with a bunch of girls in a close atmosphere. There was never any challenges managing, however it helped with having different personalities to work beside every day.  I think Bella Capelli Academy prepared us well by having us learn all parts of the cosmetology field, especially in waxing and facials. That’s very crucial! Izzazu Salon, Spa & Serata hosted an event for the Goddard School where we were performing mini-manicures, and it took me back to all those Design Team events I took part in at school. I am very glad I chose to attend Bella Capelli Academy because they always had outside events planned in the community. I feel other schools don’t focus on giving you the same experience as much as Bella Capelli Academy does.

Advice to Future Professionals...

I highly recommend assisting first because you get to work one on one with experienced stylists. You learn so much from their technical skills to the way they handle their clients. Communication and good consultations are key, and that’s something you get from experience.

Plus I find assisting to be very beneficial because their clients get to know me and trust me because I work on them with the stylists.

Tell Us About Your Career Path:

While I was in school and after I graduated I was working a privately owned salon. I heard about Denham & Co from the staff at Bella Capelli so I checked it out and have been here since November 2014!

By Going to Bella Capelli Academy, How Would You Say it's Benefited Your Career?

A huge part of my success has come from learning people skills and being a team player at Bella Capelli Academy. Teaching proper client consulations, one on one skills, and having a system set up just for that part of the service was amazingly beneficial. Also Paul Mitchell methods and culture teach us to keep an open mind to learning new tips, tricks, and techniques.

Advice to Future Professionals...

Always keep an open mind and push forward even when you mess up; learn from your mistakes.
