San Francisco Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology
A Paul Mitchell Partner School Team

Meet some of the Learning Leaders and team members who make the San Francisco Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology so special.

Michael Mouton

Esthetics Learning Leader & Dermalogica Expert

Experience in education & the beauty industry…

I bring 32 years of corporate experience, specializing in managing people in a team environment. After attending SFIEC and making a major career change I went on to on to study at the International Dermal Institute where I earned the title of Dermalogica Expert. I worked for our owner Deedee Crossett at Skin on Market then went on to own my own business, while simultaneously working at two local spas where I specialized in facials and became a waxing specialist. Passionate about education & because of my love for SFIEC I decided that teaching was my calling. When I was a student my classmates always told me that I should be a teacher.

My mentor, or the person who has most inspired me is…
I have two mentors. My mother has been my inspiration my whole life. She’s a hard worker and never gives up! She too has a love for the beauty industry, which influenced my interest. She is the matriarch of our family. My Uncle has been a huge inspiration for me as well. He was a successful hair stylist in New York. We were very close as he is my Godfather.

My favorite thing about working at San Francisco Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology is…
This school’s vibe is contagious! You cannot walk into this space and not feel the energy. I felt it when I first walked in, as a Future Professional, and I still feel it as a Learning Leader. I also love the fact that I share my knowledge with future Estheticians.

To me, living beautifully means…
Enjoying life and living everyday like it’s your last!

Experience in the beauty industry…

I have worked in the skin care and beauty industry for over 20 years as a spa owner, manager, educator, California state–licensed esthetician, makeup artist, and model. I completed my education in esthetics in 2004. I sharpened my esthetic and managerial skills at spas such as Exotic Faces in Richmond, California, Majestic Day Spa in Oakland, California (which I co-owned and operated), Spa Gaia in American Canyon, and Spa Solage in beautiful Napa Valley. I am now sharing my expertise and experience as an educator at SFIEC.

My mentor, or the person who has most inspired me is…

Three women have been my mentors and extremely influential to me: Becky Xepoleas, who taught me the importance of the business aspect of the industry; Ashia Darby, who nurtured my entrepreneurial spirit; and Karen Ray, who encouraged me to be the best I could be within the hospitality and luxury spa industry.

My favorite thing about working at SFIEC is…

Sharing my experience, love, and passion for this amazing industry with all of our Future Professionals.

To me, living beautifully means…

Leading a life you can be proud of and that others can respect; having honesty and integrity in everything you do; attempting to reduce our carbon footprint; giving back to the local community while thinking about the global picture; stopping to appreciate the little things in life: a flower growing in the middle of the sidewalk, the sunset painting buildings a different color, the stranger you pass who smiles in greeting instead of avoiding connection. Life if full of beauty, we just need to pay attention.
