A Paul Mitchell Partner School Team

Meet some of the Learning Leaders and team members who make the San Francisco Institute of Esthetics and Cosmetology so special.

Shonna Hall

Esthetics Learning Leader

Experience in education…

I have over three years' experience teaching various subjects which pertain to our industry, such as makeup, massage, eyelash extensions, and skincare.

Experience in the beauty industry…

I have worked in the skin care and beauty industry for over 20 years as a spa owner, manager, educator, California state–licensed esthetician, makeup artist, and model. I completed my education in esthetics in 2004. I sharpened my esthetic and managerial skills at spas such as Exotic Faces in Richmond, California, Majestic Day Spa in Oakland, California (which I co-owned and operated), Spa Gaia in American Canyon, and Spa Solage in beautiful Napa Valley. I am now sharing my expertise and experience as an educator at SFIEC.

My mentor, or the person who has most inspired me is…

Three women have been my mentors and extremely influential to me: Becky Xepoleas, who taught me the importance of the business aspect of the industry; Ashia Darby, who nurtured my entrepreneurial spirit; and Karen Ray, who encouraged me to be the best I could be within the hospitality and luxury spa industry.

My favorite thing about working at SFIEC is…

Sharing my experience, love, and passion for this amazing industry with all of our Future Professionals.

To me, living beautifully means…

Live, love, and contribute in ways that are perfect for you, and never let anyone steal your joy.

The energy and enthusiasm! It’s truly contagious.

To me, living beautifully means…

Leading a life you can be proud of and that others can respect; having honesty and integrity in everything you do; attempting to reduce our carbon footprint; giving back to the local community while thinking about the global picture; stopping to appreciate the little things in life: a flower growing in the middle of the sidewalk, the sunset painting buildings a different color, the stranger you pass who smiles in greeting instead of avoiding connection. Life if full of beauty, we just need to pay attention.

Ashley Rose Mockett

Learning Leader

Experience in education…

I have 13 years of experience. I started working with sales reps and educators, held in-salon seminars, and was a resident guest speaker at a beauty school. I served as the regional educator and then director of education for a high-end color and product company. Following my passion for teaching, I became an educator at Paul Mitchell The School San Diego, and I am now an educator at SFIEC.

Experience in the beauty industry…

I landed my first job in the beauty industry as a salon receptionist with the sole motivation to work in an environment that allowed me to have hair any color of the rainbow. In 2001, I earned my cosmetology license and immersed myself in all aspects of the beauty industry. It was my experience as a guest speaker that helped me realize my passion for the future of our industry, which led me to become an educator.

My mentor, or the person who has most inspired me is…

Davide Bollati and the entire brand of Davines have had the most influence over who I am as a stylist and an educator. I always try to embody the concept of confident humility whether I am behind the chair or in front of a class. I try my hardest to understand my place in the world, and how to create beauty with science and craftsmanship. I am always trying to shine my light on the people I work with.

My favorite thing about working at SFIEC is…

How strong and committed our team is. No matter what is going on, we will work it out and do it well.

To me, living beautifully means…

Creating a space for others to feel empowered to reflect who they are on the inside on their outside.

Shirley Tokuda

Future Professional Adviser, San Francisco Institute of Esthetics & Cosmetology, Paul Mitchell Partner School graduate

Experience in education…

I have always wanted to be an educator and cosmetology inspired me to accomplish that goal. I remember sitting in a pow wow thinking that I would love to return to this school to teach. Six years later, I have returned! I’ve been teaching at SFIEC for four years now, and have spent the last year as an Future Professional adviser.

Experience in the beauty industry…

My experience began in 2005 at SFIEC as a student. I then spent five years working in a salon where I generalized, which I loved. My specialty is men’s cutting and razor cutting.

My mentor, or the person who has most inspired me is…

I am most often inspired by displays of character, rather than by an individual. I believe there is something to learn from everyone, even Future Professionals, so I find mentors everywhere.

My favorite thing about working at SFIEC is…

The diversity of our Future Professionals, how truly dedicated and passionate our team is, and working with an owner who welcomes solution-finding outside of the box.

To me, living beautifully means…

Practicing being present, open, compassionate, and appreciating the individual without neglecting the whole. Living beautifully means recognizing choices.
