Whether you’re fresh out of barber school or a seasoned veteran, you need a current license to practice your craft professionally. Even if you have the best barbering skills around, keeping a current license is crucial for gaining client trust and avoiding legal issues.

So how do I renew my barber license in Florida? To legally operate in the state of Florida, you’ll need to check the renewal requirements, complete HIV/AIDS Continuing Education, log in to the DBPR Online Services Portal, submit your renewal application, pay the renewal fee, and confirm your license renewal.

How To Renew A Barber License in Florida

The entire renewal process only takes six steps and as little as a few hours.

Step 1: Check Renewal Requirements

Every state has different requirements, so if you’re new to the state, make sure to double-check the laws and rules. In Florida, licenses last for two years and then need to be renewed.

Renewing before the deadline is important. All barber’s licenses expire on July 31 of every even year. Make sure you don’t wait until the last minute. Instead, renew a week or even a month or two in advance.

Around 90–120 days before your license expires, the Department of Business and Professional Regulation (DBPR) will notify you. You will have until midnight on July 31 to complete the requirements.

An Important Note: If you don’t renew on time, you may have to complete extra education and pay a higher fee to get your license reinstated.

Step 2: Complete the HIV/AIDS Continuing Education

No license can be renewed without completing a 2-hour course on HIV/AIDS safety. These courses help ensure the safety of all barbers and their clients by teaching safe practices and the importance of cleanliness.

When you complete the course, keep the documentation that shows it was completed. You will need to submit this to the state board.

Step 3: Log In to the DBPR Online Services Portal

To renew your license, go to the DBPR website and log in. You cannot renew a license without an account. If you recently moved to Florida or completed training for the first time, you must create an account before you can continue.

To start, ensure all of your information is updated and correct before starting the renewal application. This includes contact information, address, and employer.

Step 4: Submit Your Renewal Application

Once in your portal, go to the renewal section and complete the application form. This is also where you will provide proof that you took the required continuing education courses.

Step 5: Pay the Renewal Fee

The renewal does come with a fee, which can increase if you wait too long to renew.

After paying, save your receipt to prove you completed the renewal process.

Step 6: Confirm License Renewal

Once the process is completed and the fee paid, it can take as little as hours or weeks to determine if your renewal was successful. Regularly check for a confirmation notice and the status of your renewal.

When the renewal does come through, print it out and keep a copy handy at your place of business at all times.
