Janet Lee

Learning Leader

Your Name: Janet Lee
Your Title: Learning Leader

Where did you receive your Education?
Avalon School of Cosmetology

What is your experience in the beauty industry?
Since I could hold a pair of scissors and a paint brush I’ve been “exploring” possibilities – experimenting with cause and
effect. It hasn’t always been a success, but I learned a lot (do you know that dolls don’t grow their hair back?)
I attended beauty school a little later in life, then worked in a salon for a couple of years doing both hair and nails. I started the
Instructor Program at another school and then completed it at the Ogden, Paul Mitchell school.

Who are your mentors who people who have inspired you?
So many people have touched my life and inspired me because of their courage and determination. I am constantly in awe
and motivated as get to know my peers and students, their struggles and successes. There are too many around me who inspire me
to narrow it down to a few.

What is your favorite thing about working at Paul Mitchell the School Ogden?
While I absolutely love the Future Professionals, I would say that the staff is my favorite. I’ve worked with many people over
my lifetime and have never worked with such an awesome group of people who are so supportive of each other. It is a great
environment to be in. I also get the added treat to work with my daughter – so much fun!

To me, living beauty means?
Acceptance of self and others.

TORI BALLINGER

ALUMNI

PAUL MITCHELL THE SCHOOL OGDEN

AUGUST 2014

TORI’S STORY

BIO
Tori graduated from Paul Mitchell the School Ogden in August 2014. She is the Manager and a Traveling Educator at the Clinton Towne Center Great Clips. Currently, she resides in North Ogden, Utah with her Husband and 3 fur babies. Aside from working full time, Tori also has decided to continue her education, attending Weber State University. In her free time, she enjoys being outdoors, taking in all of Utah's beauty! She snowboards and skis in the winter, and hikes and camps in the summer.  We caught up with Tori recently to ask her about her experience thus far in the industry!

HOW DID YOU GET YOUR FIRST JOB AFTER GRADUATION?
"I was appointed my job through an ad I saw about Great Clips. I decided to give them a call, and the next day I had an interview. A few short days later, I was offered a position. It all happened so fast! I have been with Great Clips ever since, and I truly love what I do and where I work. My skills have expanded immensely, and I continue to learn and grow professionally as well as personally every day!"

WHO ARE YOUR MENTORS IN THE INDUSTRY?
"I have/had many mentors now in my career, as well as when I was in school! The biggest mentor in school was Savannah Fuchs. The first day of school is always nerve-racking, scary, and exciting. Savannah was my Core teacher, and made everyone feel so welcome and eased our first-day-of-school fears. She taught me a lot of things that I still use to this day, including the good ol' "flipping shears" trick. Now, this is NOT recommended to do during the State boards, (or while in school) but it sure does impress my guests I have now!"

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR CURRENT STUDENTS AND ALUMNI?

"My advice would be to keep your options open! Don't settle for one or the other, do as many things as possible to learn and grow. Continue your education at every opportunity. You create your own success; the harder you work, the more money you'll make. Be wise about your choices in the industry, but don't be afraid to take risks. The beauty industry is full of different opportunities. Know what is available to you, and don't be afraid to go after what you want."

WHAT'S NEXT FOR YOU?

"I have only accomplished a little of what I plan to do in my career. Being the Manager and a Traveling Educator for Great Clips is amazing. I absolutely love it! My next goal is to move on to the Corporate side of the Company, and work more in the business area of the industry. From there, the sky is the limit. Great Clips has many different areas to explore, and I am just getting my feet wet. I do know that I am excited for my future with the company, and am equally excited to see where this path takes me!"

ALEXANDRIA MORRISON

ALUMNI

PAUL MITCHELL THE SCHOOL OGDEN

CLASS OF MAY 2014

ALEX'S STORY

BIO -
Alex was born in Ogden (Utah), and is half Navajo Indian. Her native roots run deep, and it is something she is extremely proud of! She discovered her passion for Hairdressing when she was about 18 years old. She was drawn to the passion of creativity that this industry provides. After graduating High School, Alex decided to attend a traditional University. She knew it wasn't what her desires were, but decided to give it a go. After a year of attending, not knowing what she was going to major in, she decided to change her route and attend school for Master Esthetics. After obtaining her Master Esthetics License, she felt as though something was still missing. She soon realized what was missing the whole time; creativity. (The reason behind starting the journey into the beauty industry.) It was shortly after this discovery that Alex enrolled at Paul Mitchell the School Ogden. "Enrolling at PMTS Ogden changed my life! I felt as if I finally found what I wanted to do with my career. The best part is, I had a natural talent for it! I couldn't be more grateful for my decision to join Paul Mitchell, and finally becoming a part of the Hairdressing Industry!" -Alexandria Morrison

WHAT ARE YOU GREATEST ACCOMPLISHMENTS THUS FAR IN YOUR CAREER?

"To narrow it down is so challenging. Every client is an accomplishment. However, if I had to really sit down and nail it out, I would have to say my greatest accomplishments thus far would be building confidence, learning about respect, using my creativity in ways I never imagined, and lastly; the importance of continuing education." We asked Alex to go more into detail with each of those things, and here is what she had to say.

"Having confidence behind the chair is NUMBER 1! If you don't have confidence in yourself, neither will your guest!"

"R.E.S.P.E.C.T. Find out what it means to me! (Made you sing that to the tune, didn't I) ;) Respect is one of the hardest behaviors to learn. Without respect, you lose so much more than just a guest..you lose mentors, friends, opportunities, and more. Having respect for everyone is crucial in this industry."

"Creativity. The thing that drew me to the industry in the very beginning. For some reason, I kept pushing it aside, and doing other things that didn't fill my cup. Now, I have learned that there is truly an entirely different way to tap into that creativity, and really let it show. Creativity allows me to get inside my brain along with allowing me to work with the most amazing people to create beautiful work! I would not have been able to enter NAHA, or do any type of photo shoot for that matter, with out the gift of creativity.

"Lastly, continuing education. Both of the Salons I have worked for offered incentives for Advanced/Continued Education. All of the things mentioned above (and more), would not of made an impact if I didn't have the opportunity to continue my education. I have been beyond grateful with what I have been able to learn and continue to learn outside of school!"

WHO WERE/ARE YOUR MENTORS IN THE INDUSTRY?

"My mentors change by the day! I am continuously inspired and motivated by so many, especially within the industry. Right now I'd have to say: Kevin Murphy, Jake Thompson, Fumi Eguchi, Vidal Sasson, and Chrystopher Benson." (Told you I can't narrow it down)

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR CURRENT STUDENTS AND ALUMNI?

"My best piece of advice would be to stay motivated and passionate! Hairdressing and building your business and brand is hard work. If this is truly your passion, it will show through your work! With all the hard work you put in, success will absolutely follow soon after"

ALISE CARTER

ALUMNI

PAUL MITCHELL THE SCHOOL OGDEN

GRADUATED NOVEMBER 2013

ALISE'S STORY

BIO...

Alise currently lives in North Salt Lake City (Utah) with her husband and 2 adorable pups. She has been in the beauty industry since 2012. Shortly after graduating from Paul Mitchell the School Ogden, Alise found her true passion and calling - the world of Eyelash Extensions. She started out as an independent self-employed lash artist. From there, she quickly began to develop a strong clientele, which in turn has led her to where she is now; the Owner and CEO of Bua Beauty & Co. Along with owning her own company, Alise also has her own product line, an extremely detailed training program, as well as a team of highly trained beauty professionals. "I am in love with educating and helping others expand their career and pushing them to their full potential. I can't wait to continue to share all of what my team and I have to offer all of the lash and beauty obsessed!" -Alise Carter.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVORITE PART OF SCHOOL?…
"I really loved this school because of the many opportunities that they provide you with. I love that they teach in many different ways to fit each individuals learning style. I also like the fact that there were different Learning Leaders to learn from. Even thought they were all teaching the same technique and system, each one had their own flare. It allowed me to take a little bit from everyone and create something on my own. Paul Mitchell the School Ogden gives you the chance to be BIG and to reach your goals. They provide the tools you need to be the best cosmetologist out there. I also enjoyed the different clubs and teams that were offered. Joining those not only help you better your career and network, but they also help better yourself as a person".

HOW DID YOU GET INTO WHAT YOU DO NOW?...
"During school, I loved hair. I loved seeing the outcome of each client. How amazing is it when you have met all of your clients expectations and more?! Such a great feeling! (That feeling you feel...that is your own personal Bua). Lash Extensions were still pretty new to the market here in Utah. Shortly after graduating, I took a Lash Class to get certified. The main reason I took the course was to grow my resume. (The more training, the better, right?) I thought that having that training under my belt would help me land a position at the Salon & Spa I had my eye on. I never anticipated that I would become a full time lash artist. Come to find out, I had a niche for it! As my clientele for hair services was growing, so was my lash clientele. I decided that I wanted to specialize in one thing, and I found myself growing with lash services at a higher pace then hair services, so that is what I went for. I am so extremely grateful that my license I received from Paul Mitchell the School Ogden allows me to literally go anyway I want in the industry. After beginning to master my skills, my clientele was reaching a max. I had to start turning people away! Thats when I thought - I can grow even more, and still service all these clients! That is how I began Bua Beauty. As mentioned above, I own a Lash product line as well as a training program. We continue to grow every day, and it is so humbling to see. I truly, wholeheartedly can say that I Love what I do, and who I do it for."

WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR CURRENT FUTURE PROFESSIONALS AND ALUMNI?

I think the best piece of advice would be to never stop learning and continuing your education. You are never done learning. Take advantage of school, take advantage of the learning leaders, additional classes, other Future Professionals, and the tools given to you. If you're already graduated, still take advantage of the classes that are provided. Whether they are at the school, a local salon, or even the beauty supply store. Talk with others in the industry by being social with them. Get to know them as a person and a business. (This helped me enormously). The last thing I would advise is to be your own person. I know the feeling of trying to fit in and do what everyone else does, but remember - You're in school (or a Salon) to grow and YOUR life and YOUR career. Don't waste the time or energy wanting to be someone else. You are the best version of your future.
